LETTERS

Urban Spree Galerie proudly presents « LETTERS », an international group show featuring 10 artists engaged in the practice of urban calligraphy.

The Exhibition will finally take place starting on Friday, April 23rd, 2021 at Urban Spree Galerie and online

LETTERS focuses on European and Mediterranean artists whose practice is strongly influenced by their graffiti years, past or current, their passion for painting, lettering, abstraction, and the use of brushes.

This first chapter covers artists nourished  by the classical European calligraphy tradition (roman, runic or cyrilic scripts) as well as arabic calligraphy, but first and foremost by their contemporary practice of muralism and abstraction: muralism or « street art » is an integral part of the practice of « calligraffiti » – the holy alliance of calligraphy and the urban landscape, shaped by graffiti, whereby speed, precision and abstraction converge to give birth to this particular urban flow.

Whereas letters and alphabets are consubstantial to graffiti, urban calligraphy diverges with the use of a particular reference to traditional calligraphy and use of specific contact tools like brushes instead of aerosols.

Artists are using calligraphy as a materia prima. However, the final result is a substantial evolution from the traditional corpus of calligraphy with serious inroads into abstraction, where letters are turned into abstracted shapes and signs, dissolved, essentialized, obfuscated and cyphered.

LETTERS is a show about post-calligraphy and post-graffiti. About signs, mutations, strokes and freedom.

Arbeitstitel completes the 4th and final wall of the StillStand Project

The Berlin artist duo Arbeitstitel (Robert Westphal | Laurent Wians) has completed their mural at Urban Spree, the 4th of the StillStand series and the final wall of the project.

The duo painted an abstract composition, made essentially from fragmented elements and visually impressive with a bright palette, enhanced by sparks of fluorescent yellow.

The AT20 mural at Urban Spree, facing Warschauer Str., will be visible until around the end of July 2020. Photos by Lukas K. Stiller.

#StillSTAND Project’s Vorspiel: Johannes Mundinger and Señor Schnu

Just before the official kickoff of our Still STAND project where 4 applications to paint the Urban Spree Artist Wall have been selected – out of 89 submissions – and will unfold over the course of June and July 2020, both Johannes Mundinger and Señor Schnu wanted to give a face lift to the wall after a long winter, and Corona oblige, actually much longer than we had anticipated.

Johannes Mundinger at Urban Spree, April 2020

Johannes Mundinger painted the large wall at Urban Spree mid-April 2020 (his third take on the wall, setting thereby a new record) with an abstract composition in tune with the « Leave No One Behind » campaign to repatriate refugee children from camps in Greece.

Shortly after, Señor Schnu took over the Wall with a vibrant composition assembling different elements from propaganda, economics, and positive symbols to make a statement: « We can’t return to normal, because the normal we had was precisely the problem » or how legitimate aspirations to « get back to normal » owing to the corona crisis must instead give way to healthier relationships and a different way to create social links.

As the Still STAND team started to get together for the first upcoming wall of the project, our drone photographer, Lukas Stiller, managed to take spectacular shots of the wall at dusk.
