Sicoer: « Explorations » Solo Show Opening

Urban Spree Galerie presents “Explorations“, the first solo show of the Krakow-based calligraffiti painter SICOER in Berlin.

“Explorations” – initially due to open in March 2020 – is the outcome of several one-week working sessions at Urban Spree in Berlin during the months of January and February 2020, interspersed with intense studio time in Krakow during the lockdown.

The Covid-19 closed the borders and the artist found himself in an unexpected form of retreat and focused entirely on his art, endlessly experimenting, finding new tools, new ways of expression and ultimately discovering a more abstract part of his work which is giving a new direction to the show.

Sicoer is a calligraffiti painter based in Krakow well known for his vandal graffiti as well as his handstyle studio works. Having started graffiti in 1998 and still active nowadays, Sicoer created in parallel a studio practice based on the combination of letters, geometric compositions, flow and a limited use of color range. Relentlessly exploring, Sicoer turned recently his graphic experiments towards calligraffiti abstraction.

Lars Wunderlich: « What Are We Looking For? » Solo Show Opening

Urban Spree Galerie presents « What Are We Looking For? », a solo show of new works by Berlin-based visual artist Lars Wunderlich a.k.a. « Look the Weird ».

The exhibition will kick off during Gallery Weekend Berlin with an Opening on Friday, April 26th, 2019 from 18:30 in presence of the artist.

The exhibition is the outcome of a 3-month Art Residency at Urban Spree.

What Are We Looking For?” is a vertiginous exploration of our tech-dominated and image-centric world. Our global course to an endless progress, always more distant from the natural order, over-leveraging our resources, using ever-expanding technology to achieve a deeper exploration and understanding. But what are we really looking for? And do we understand better?

In this conceptual journey which is an acute exploration of modernity, Lars Wunderlich crafts and paints visual collages, replicates portraits generated by algorithms, and juxtaposes different time elements which generate collisions, distortions and glitches, to better highlight the unreal nature of those representations and the danger thereof.

His paintings bear some similarities with the “New Leipzig School”, albeit with technology at the core, and aesthetics boosted by Artificial Intelligence and modern faux-semblants. They are representations of non-existing representations, real but fake, distorted, whether by time, space, speed, or truth. A perpetual collision of images.

Lars Wunderlich (b. 1981 in Neubrandenburg, GDR) is a German post-graffiti artist, member of the 9-member street art crew “The Weird” (Nychos, Low Bros, DXTR, Vidam…) under the moniker “Look the Weird”.

Besides spraypainting/wallpainting and graphic design, Lars is an accomplished painter. “What are we looking for?” is his first solo exhibition with Urban Spree Galerie.

Opening of Anthony Lister’s exhibition « Sneaky Bit In »

Urban Spree Galerie presents « Sneaky Bit In« , a solo show by the Australian visual & street artist Anthony Lister. The Opening of the show will be on Friday, September 14th, 2018 in the presence of the artist.

Invited by Urban Spree as part of our Artist-in-Residence program, Lister spent 3 weeks at Urban Spree between August and September 2018 to create in situ a whole new body of large scale works, installations, media art, and a large mural.

For this residency project, Lister incorporated a large palette of references stemming from cubism, Picasso’s « Les Demoiselles d’Avignon » and « Guernica« , Alejandro Jodorowski’s « The Holy Montain« , African masks, religion, divination and tarot, Aboriginal trans women, and direct references to Damien Hirst.

Lister’s outdoor mural at Urban Spree is a variation and alternate narrative on the theme of the main painting of the exhibition, in a style reminiscent of Egon Schiele and incorporating elements of Picasso’s Guernica. The wall was executed with a 6m long extension pole, and signed with a paint-filled fire extinguisher.

Anthony Lister (b. 1979 in Brisbane) is a contemporary Australian-born painter and installation artist, best known for his merging of “high” and “low” cultural imagery. Particularly well known as a street artist, Lister is considered amongst the best in the field with graffiti art legend Banksy even commenting that Lister appears to piss great art in his sleep.

He studied at the Griffith Queensland College of Art and was further educated under mentor Max Gimblett in New York City. Lister helped pioneer the street art movement in his home city as a teenager and is considered Australia’s premier street artist.

Lister employs multiple media including charcoal, acrylic, spray paint, oil pastels to create his scrawling, figurative style.

Lister has exhibited nationally and internationally including at the Lazarides Gallery in London, Underdogs Gallery in Lisbon, New Image Art Gallery in Los Angeles, Robert Fontaine Gallery in Miami, Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York, Olsen Gallery in Sydney, Black Art Projects in Melbourne, Fireworks Gallery in Brisbane, and Allouche Gallery in New York City.

Lister currently lives and works between Sydney and New York City.

Opening of Mik Shida: « A Conduit Order » on 28.06

Urban Spree Galerie presents « A Conduit Order », the first solo show in Germany of the Australian visual artist and muralist Mik Shida. The exhibition will open in our Berlin galerie on Thursday, June 28th 2018, starting at 19:00.

Mik Shida was invited to Berlin by Urban Spree for a 2-month Art Residency which culminates into a presentation of a full new body of works, including large format paintings, and installations.

Photographic Credit: Duran Levinson

Shida’s paintings are shamanic « tableaux vivants » in which spiritual, ritualistic and organic elements coalesce, where temporality is transient, boundaries and space indistinct, where portals, alternative dimensions, spells and energy fields abound.

Spirits and movement are the materia prima of Shida’s oeuvre. The artist is a vessel, a conduit, through which sprits awaken, arise, and finally materialize within the paintings, within those transient spaces where the artist is allowed to conduct the dance, and is in turn being directed by the creations his paintings have summoned.

We can also view and understand Shida’s murals as spiritual beacons, large outdoor gateways meant to create an intercession with spirits.

Shida (born 1990) is an Australian multidisciplinary artist best known for his large scale mural work. Shida’s practice encompasses video, publishing, public works and murals.

« Shida explores the relationship between Ritual, Sexuality and Love. Psychedelic entities are entwined in a ceremonial act transcending the bounds of known reality. Shida works like an ancient shaman with each works being in essence an invocation, an energetic manifestation, a prayer to joy. » (Wikipedia)

In parallel to Shida’s presentation of works in our main galerie space, Urban Spree invites Knarf, Fresh Max and Mafia Tabak for a pop up exhibition in our « Ecke ».
