Opening of Anthony Lister’s exhibition “Sneaky Bit In”

Urban Spree Galerie presents “Sneaky Bit In“, a solo show by the Australian visual & street artist Anthony Lister. The Opening of the show will be on Friday, September 14th, 2018 in the presence of the artist.

Invited by Urban Spree as part of our Artist-in-Residence program, Lister spent 3 weeks at Urban Spree between August and September 2018 to create in situ a whole new body of large scale works, installations, media art, and a large mural.

For this residency project, Lister incorporated a large palette of references stemming from cubism, Picasso’s “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” and “Guernica“, Alejandro Jodorowski’s “The Holy Montain“, African masks, religion, divination and tarot, Aboriginal trans women, and direct references to Damien Hirst.

Lister’s outdoor mural at Urban Spree is a variation and alternate narrative on the theme of the main painting of the exhibition, in a style reminiscent of Egon Schiele and incorporating elements of Picasso’s Guernica. The wall was executed with a 6m long extension pole, and signed with a paint-filled fire extinguisher.

Anthony Lister (b. 1979 in Brisbane) is a contemporary Australian-born painter and installation artist, best known for his merging of “high” and “low” cultural imagery. Particularly well known as a street artist, Lister is considered amongst the best in the field with graffiti art legend Banksy even commenting that Lister appears to piss great art in his sleep.

He studied at the Griffith Queensland College of Art and was further educated under mentor Max Gimblett in New York City. Lister helped pioneer the street art movement in his home city as a teenager and is considered Australia’s premier street artist.

Lister employs multiple media including charcoal, acrylic, spray paint, oil pastels to create his scrawling, figurative style.

Lister has exhibited nationally and internationally including at the Lazarides Gallery in London, Underdogs Gallery in Lisbon, New Image Art Gallery in Los Angeles, Robert Fontaine Gallery in Miami, Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York, Olsen Gallery in Sydney, Black Art Projects in Melbourne, Fireworks Gallery in Brisbane, and Allouche Gallery in New York City.

Lister currently lives and works between Sydney and New York City.

Opening of Mik Shida: “A Conduit Order” on 28.06

Urban Spree Galerie presents “A Conduit Order”, the first solo show in Germany of the Australian visual artist and muralist Mik Shida. The exhibition will open in our Berlin galerie on Thursday, June 28th 2018, starting at 19:00.

Mik Shida was invited to Berlin by Urban Spree for a 2-month Art Residency which culminates into a presentation of a full new body of works, including large format paintings, and installations.

Shida’s paintings are shamanic “tableaux vivants” in which spiritual, ritualistic and organic elements coalesce, where temporality is transient, boundaries and space indistinct, where portals, alternative dimensions, spells and energy fields abound.

Spirits and movement are the materia prima of Shida’s oeuvre. The artist is a vessel, a conduit, through which sprits awaken, arise, and finally materialize within the paintings, within those transient spaces where the artist is allowed to conduct the dance, and is in turn being directed by the creations his paintings have summoned.

We can also view and understand Shida’s murals as spiritual beacons, large outdoor gateways meant to create an intercession with spirits.

Shida (born 1990) is an Australian multidisciplinary artist best known for his large scale mural work. Shida’s practice encompasses video, publishing, public works and murals.

“Shida explores the relationship between Ritual, Sexuality and Love. Psychedelic entities are entwined in a ceremonial act transcending the bounds of known reality. Shida works like an ancient shaman with each works being in essence an invocation, an energetic manifestation, a prayer to joy.” (Wikipedia)

In parallel to Shida’s presentation of works in our main galerie space, Urban Spree invites Knarf, Fresh Max and Mafia Tabak for a pop up exhibition in our “Ecke”.

Opening of “Journey”, Bisco Smith’s Residency and Exhibition

Urban Spree Galerie is inviting the NYC-based visual artist Bisco Smith (b.1980) for a 3-week Art Residency at Urban Spree.

During his Berlin residency, Bisco Smith will be creating a whole new body of large scale works that will culminate in a solo show in the galerie from 08.03.2018 to 21.04.2018.

“Journey” will bring the visitor to the universe of Bisco’s largely freestyle and calligraffiti-inspired black-and-white visual beats.

Bisco’s roots lie in music, graffiti, and street art. He works in a variety of formats, including canvas and large outdoor murals, and his style can be characterized as a blend of graffiti deconstruction, gestural abstraction, and lyric-based stylewriting. Made predominantly with a black and white color palette, his art visually captures the rhythms of music and the energy of the moment through its spontaneous marks and abstracted text.

His work is regularly exhibited in major markets and is collected by both national and international collectors.

Opening of SP38 Art Residency Exhibition “Post Vandal 2”

Berlin-based street artist SP38 was invited by Urban Spree Galerie and Boddinale for a special gallery residency alongside the film festival (15-25.02.2018).

After 2 weeks of daily indoor work and street interventions in Friedrichshain, we invite the public to discover the outcome of the art residency over the upcoming weekend together with the artist.

The exhibition opens on Saturday, February 24th from 14:00 to 23:00 and will continue on Sunday February 25th from 12:00 to 23:00. Visitors will be able to acquire the original works on canvas and paper produced during the residency in addition to a selection of screen prints and stickers.

SP38 will also screen print “Post Vandal” tote bags live on Saturday!

Post Vandal 2“, explores the notion of vandalism at the age of post-graffiti.

A relentless urban wanderer and street typographer, SP38 (b.1960) uses different lo-fi techniques (collages, paste-ups, stickers, screenprints, paintings) to imprint his vision of the city and his letters to the walls. Involved at an early stage with the “Figuration Libre” movement in Paris and participant to the first graffiti and street art meeting in 1985 with Vive la Peinture, Speedy Graphito, Futura, Miss Tic, and Blek Le Rat, SP38 has navigated in different squat scenes (including the infamous Berlin’s Tacheles) before moving to Berlin in 1995.

A prime witness of the fast-paced gentrification of the metropolis, his art subtly reveals the fractures of the city through successive campaigns and catchy slogans (“Who kills Berlin?”, “Erased”, “Escape”, “Occupy”, “Vive la Bourgeoisie”, Vive la Crise”…), where the intimate, personal level often collides with the bigger scale.
