DAMO SUZUKI
Former lead singer of the legendary and seminal german krautrock band Can, Damo, resident in Köln (De) since the 70s, has been performing since mid ´97 with his project DAMO SUZUKI´S NETWORK around the world with more than 7,000 different musicians in 43 countries. He will bring his project this year at the 3rd edition, and first summer one, of the Interkosmos festival. A festival focused on several forms of music: experimentation, electronic, krautrock, drone, post punk, impro.
Damo will perform with TAU from Berlin.

CUMMI FLU is the latest incarnation of the ever-changing multimedia illusionist Oliver Doerell. Born in Brussels, he was the driving force behind the electronica projects Dictaphone and SWOD, and a sound box in Raz Ohara’s Odd Orchestra.

There was once a pop music genre that was not actually a genre. It emerged in the late nineties and early 2000s. It was called ‘electronica’. This genre was no more a genre than ‘indie’ or even ‘pop’. Electronica was a term simply used to define club music, ambient or noise. It referred to a compartmentalized and, for the most part, friendly listening music that was not good to dance to. As a result, a wide range of musical styles came to be classified under this non-genre just because there was no other suitable classification at the time. And now Oliver Doerell is producing music that sounds like a late electronica manifesto.

BLUE CRIME’s stars have a gloomy shine, inspired by myths and dreams and parallel universes. Earth felt too low; space is the place. They started out as a glowworm in a dark atom shelter, and emerged as eerie moonpop, growing grittier in time. Call it moonpsych, noisefolk, call it earthquakes with guitars and vocal eclipses. Or just feel it, and call it nothing at all. Be it love or hate, dark or light… Blue Crime shows no
mercy for the sober and cold-hearted.

Various & Gould: Identikit Generator

In 2007, the Berlin-based artist duo Various & Gould launched the Identikit series, a reflection on multiple identities, through a choice of faces & words composing endless variations and contradictions.

10 years later, the duo is invited by the Leipzig Book Fair 2018 to introduce an updated version of the series, focused on Europe and its numerous crises and issues.

This project discusses the topic of immigration, identities and clichés. Identities are highly complex and always diverse whereas clichés are the embodiment of simplification.

To visualize this issue, Various & Gould have chosen a technique known from children’s books. Portraits of prominent personages and words are horizontally cut into strips enabling to rearrange them in endless variations. There are numerous different options – some make sense, some do not, but most invoke images confronting the viewer with own stereotypes and clichés.

The duo has developed a digital version, where users can compose their own motives and then publish online. So far, the version uses only german words but an english version should be available soon.

Palm

präsentiert von Spex – Magazin für Popkultur und ByteFM

Palm plays rock music backwards. Eve Alpert and Kasra Kurt’s guitars occupy themselves most often with the pace-keeping work typical of a rhythm section. Meanwhile, Gerasimos Livitsanos’ bass and Hugo Stanley’s drums perform commentary and reportage from their deeply embedded positions at the front. The band is firmly attached to the physicality of rock, but not as much its tone; their instruments tend to sound like any number of things at any given time.

None of the members of Palm are formally trained on their instruments. The band formed in 2011 at college in Upstate New York, when high school friends Eve and Kasra met Gerasimos and Hugo. In those early days, the band was just beginning to forge its collective musical identity through experiments in recording and performing live.

Their first album, Trading Basics (2015), was written in Hudson, NY, a riverside outpost where the group could clarify its intentions outside the direct influence of nearby cultural capitals. That year, the members of Palm relocated to Philadelphia, where they continue to live only a few blocks apart from one another. This proximity has facilitated a level of collaboration necessary for a sound so slippery to remain in the firm grasp of its players.

On 2017’s Shadow Expert EP, they made use of the steady hand granted by a tireless touring schedule, cutting their songs to efficiencies of pop confection without sacrificing the avant-adventurism at the center. The effort was met with praise from such outlets as Pitchfork, Stereogum, Spin, and Tiny Mix Tapes, who likened the sound variously to Stereolab, Slint, Sonic Youth and Broadcast. With Rock Island(2018), Palm excuses the company of these myriad influences with a sly brush of a hand, ushering the listener into a new domain, thrillingly strange for all its familiarity.

Die Neuen Schweden 2017

DIE NEUEN SCHWEDEN are coming back! Join us for the showcase with 3 newcomer bands from Sweden on August 30 at Urban Spree. The event is free for everyone.

DIE NEUEN SCHWEDEN are back! Together with the Swedish educational institute SENSUS MUSIC, we are excited to present the third edition of our joint project for young bands DIE NEUEN SCHWEDEN (“The New Swedes”). This year in late August, we will once again invite three Swedish newcomer bands to Berlin in order to take a look behind the thick curtain of the music industry. Together with the young musicians, we will venture on a music industry crawl through the city and present a showcase night at Urban Spree.

All the artists participating in this year’s project – and thoroughly chosen by us from many many applicants – are introduced below.

DIE NEUEN SCHWEDEN 2017 are:

Many Voices Speak (Stockholm)
Many Voices Speak aka Matilda Mård released three singles in a month’s time last fall before dropping her debut EP “Away For All Time” in late October 2016. The EP was written and recorded in the small Swedish industrial town of Borlänge, where Matilda relocated to escape Stockholm’s busier pace. The songs on the EP have an airy freedom and calmness to them, which emanate from the space in which they were created. The single “Video Child” and the cover of the classic “Blue Moon” caught international acclaim from, among others, Stereogum, Noisey, The Line Of Best Fit, DIY and more. The dreamy indie pop and folk influences has been compared with Beach House and Destroyer, yet Matilda really has her own sound and vibe. The live debut took place at the festival Where’s The Music? in February 2017. Many Voices Speak will release a new single in August 2017, and her debut album is coming out later this fall.

Baula (Gothenburg)
Baula is a Swedish/Icelandic duo consisting of Kallo Thunberg and Ísak Ásgeirsson. They are based in Gothenburg and were formed right before Iceland Airwaves 2015, where they played eleven off-venue shows during the week-long festival. Baula released their second single “Just Like Yesterday” in January 2017. The song was reviewed in over 30 music blogs and described as “music that hurts” by the Swedish music magazine GAFFA. Baula will release their third single in August 2017.

Kuda Aka Mr Realtalk(Östersund)
Kuda, a Zimbabwean rapper based in Östersund, Sweden, is a name we mostly hear in the very private hallways of hip-hop social media. Kuda has a long love affair with hip-hop and the art of putting rhyme to beat to produce a well-thought-out verse and song. He centers the daily life of the working man, the eye in the street, the voice of reason and making money. He raps in multiple languages on his tracks, including Shona, Ndebele, Setswana, Zulu and English. Kuda has done collaborations with many artists, including Howard Who (RMH), Follow Him To The End Of The Desert and Johan Vuitton & Görda. In April 2017 he released his new EP “Therapy”. The videos for the first single “Intro” as well as the track “Outro” are out now on YouTube.
