Urban Spree Gallery presents: The CIRCLE SHOW

A group exhibition featuring a selection of Berlin based artists within our creative network.

Urban Spree is not only an exhibition space but also a cultural melting pot. For the first Circle Show, we’ve invited a great lineup of artists to create each an original art piece, resembling the shape of a circle.

Camera x Circle

unnamed-2

So excited to have two of the most mind blowing bands of today’s music scene together in one place: If Circle, hailing from the remote small town of Pori, are no “cult band”, the word will have to be re-defined: Formed in 1991 initially as a tribute act to the Britain’s Loop (hence the name), Circle is the most prolific and mysterious force of the Finnish avant-rock underground. Constantly reinventing themselves, weaving hypnotic mantras out of relentless krautrock beats, heavy riffs, arty noise, dark psychedelia, and soundtrack-like beauty. Hard, chilly repetition has served as the lone unifying theme throughout almost 25 years of experiments. As Circle and under various other monikers (such as Falcon, Pharaoh Overlord, Pharaoh Overlörd, Motospandex and many more) they have released a disorienting host of albums on numberless micro labels, constantly confusing their fans with hazardous stylistic changes and highly hallucinatory live shows.
Camera 02 (credit Oscar Valentine)
Camera became notorious for their hit-and-run style live concerts in Berlin subway stations – often stopped by the police, the “krautrock guerilla” developed their trance-inducing trademark sound which is propelling the shimmering surfaces and the blunt drumbeats of Hallogallo-period Neu! into a dystopian future. Their new and second album “Remember I Was Carbon Oxide” was released by Hamburg’s Bureau B imprint to much critical acclaim at the end of last year.

⊙ ØRESUND SPACE COLLECTIVE ⊙
ØSC is an ever changing music collective from Denmark and Sweden that play totally on the spot improvised deep trip space rock music. They have released 25 (!!!) records since 2006. Music for your mind to escape the Matrix.
– latest release:
“Chatoyant Breath” – May 16, 2018
“ØSC had been at the Black Tornado recording back in November but our friend Gary (Yawning Man) was in town and wanted to jam. It had been a long time since the main touring band of ØSC (Nick, Jiri, Mogens, myself) had been in the studio. We grabbed Martin, who plays with Nick, Jiri and Mogens in the Univerzals as well as with Jiri in his band, Fri Galaxe to play drums. He had played quite a few gigs with us in Denmark the last years. Nicklas from Papir, was a great choice to play with Gary as both are fans of each other and we love to play with Nicklas. We had a cool band.
This session was pretty fast, all done in one day and just 5 jams recorded. The vinyl is an edited version of the jams, while the CD features extended versions of the tracks so you can hear more or less the entire course of the musical journey. The music on these sections is more spaced out, relaxed and exploratory as it flows and weaves and grows tentacles to tickle and scratch your inner thoughts. Enjoy the sensations.” – Dr. Space, 2018

⊙ BLACK MOON CIRCLE ⊙
BMC from Trondheim is dedicated to dark psychedelic space rock, driven by a disposition towards prolonged jams.
– latest release:
“Flowing into the 3rd Dimension” – August 25, 2017

⊙ MOUNTAIN DUST ⊙
Mountain Dust’s set was a blast of cymbal crashing, headbanging hard rock laced with doom metal and a sensible dosage of psychedelic pretensions. The songs weren’t excuses for aimless guitar wankfests, but slithering heavy jams (the bass player laid hypnotic grooves on his Rickenbacker) that turned in on themselves like a snake eating its tail. Organ à la Deep Purple gave the music a gothic nuance, but the big surprise was lap steel guitar fed through an effects rack.
The band reinvented their blues-metal sound — a genre now as outmoded as bell-bottoms and songs about scoring with underage groupies — with well-crafted riffs that make you forget it’s all the same 4/4 rhythm you’ve heard a million times. They had masterful dynamics and pauses: the music breathed, but it breathed like Godzilla. For four thrashers who look like head shop regulars, Mountain Dust didn’t play a bum note all night.

Babel Trio + AdirJan

ADIR JAN
Best defined as Cosmopolitan Kurdesque, ADIR JAN is a melting pot of Mid-Easterranean sounds and rhythms, progressively combined with traditional, pop, indie and psychedelic harmonies.
Adir Jan writes and performs songs in Kurmanjî, Turkish, Arabic and many other languages – and especially in the ancient Zaza – that intensifies the sweet and spicy compositions with his bands mates Conny Kreuter, Christos Drouzas, Hasan Al Nour, Can Tüfekcioglu and Hogir Göregen.

His lyrics revolve mostly around gay love and passion, pleasure and pain, but also highlight critical social issues, such as war, homophobia and racism.

Adir Jan’s message is clear: universal love and resistance to repressions!

BABEL TRIO
Babel Trio is consisted by three members, Dimitris (electric lute), Trikalero (Drums), Michael (electric bass). Babel Trio’s members come from different areas of Greece bringing together at least three different influences of Greek traditional Music. Dimitris, with roots from Crete, Trikalero from the North-west part of the mainland and Michael from the Ionian Islands, were involved in music in very early ages, inspired by traditional, classic, jazz and metal/stoner rock music styles. Growing up in non-urban areas they experienced traditional music concerts and fests that included also big circle dances. Their traditional music influences along with their heavy rock ‘blender’, and their personal, electric touch, creates a uniquely blended sound that likened as classic Cretan lyre player Skordalos possessed by Melvins.

Babel trio is aiming in producing music that screams the cultural, economic and social struggle of Greeks nowadays, through the emotional state of anger. These emotions are expressed though explosive drums and distorted traditional melodies played by the electric lute and the electric bass, and speaks in a progressive folk rock, psychedelic music code, rooted in the island of Crete and the Aegean sea.

Unhuman: Release Party

INSTRUMENTS OF DISCIPLINE PRESENTS:

Live Acts:

#UNHUMAN (GR/DE)
Unhuman will perform his first live set in 5 years, presenting his uncut vision of dystopic noise.

Human Larvae (DE)
“Human Larvae’s ability to incorporate and balance more aggressive passages of junk metal clangor, swarming distortion, and ferocious vocals with hopelessly bleak and gloomy atmospheres immediately sets them apart from anything else in the scene today, though reference points can be made to Gnawed, IRM, Grunt, and Theologian. On a whole, Behind Blinding Light stands on its own as a recording of great depth and compositional expertise, and can be regarded as a benchmark recording of pure and true industrial music.” – Malignant Records

AMANDA KNOX (Debut show///IT)
Berlin based produceer Ayarcana plays his first show as Amanda Knox, expect live, electronic sludge.

ERSTWHILE (Berlin Debut///NLD)
Erstwhile is one of the monikers under which Kevin Jansen (Svartvit, Clamor, Qualm, Ratteknaeghen) presents his auditory output. This time around the sounds are rooted in tradition, paying hommage to the greats of the eighties through minimal power electronics dirges. Thematically the project deals with the fragility embedded in our everyday lives.

Live Aktion/Installation/Performance:

Nullam Rem Natam (GR/DE)
Originating from the Latin phrase “nullam rem natam”- means no thing born, an emphatic idiom for nothing.Nullam Rem Natam create and destroy. Their actions are reactions.Their reason is absurd and absurdity is chaos. Unfolding secrets, revealing fears, abusing the psyche. Hunters of intensity and seekers of purgation. An eternal circle, the serpent devouring its tail. Nullam Rem Natam are a group of actionists, composed in Berlin in 2016.
As resident artists of Liber Null Berlin, they commit visual sins and provoke the subconscious. Ignoring the limits and obeying to instincts, they practice and perform their experiments
using sacramental and ceremonial methods.

DJS:

Espectra Negra
Espectra Negra is a very consequent project from Berlin which focuses on Industrial & Ritualistic Noise. She keeps the old industrial sound mixed with shamanic elements and sound art. After her first self-release album “Savage Justice” which included two collaborative tracks with Annie Stubbs (UK/Suddent Infant/Devotion) -vocals- and John Murphy (R.I.P) (AU/SPK/LastDominionLost) -drums- she reached serious local and international resonance for her underground power and strong political content.

AGENCY
One half of OPERANT/IOD, Agency will close the night, mopping up the sludge on the dance floor.
