Christopher Stead: Acid Reign

Urban Spree Galerie presents “Acid Reign“, the first solo show in Germany of the British visual artist Christopher Stead.

Acid Reign is the culmination of a long-term residency at Lab Kalkhost in North Germany. Christopher Stead produced on the shores of the Baltic Sea several large format works, using a process mixing graffiti techniques and natural elements.

Cans of paint are burst with nails, sand and mud is flung. An alchemy between the paint and the land turns into a painterly concrete, cementing ideas, solidifying a tangible truth. The paintings are stuffed into rucksacks and returned to the studio where Ikea bags full of previous endeavours lie dormant ready to rework. A fecund process is born.

The fences used in the supports of the pieces are taken from decaying plots on the train lines.

Rusty fences, transgressed and twisted by nature are transported to the studio. The erosion of the metal emasculates the sterile man-made purity of the material. This gives each painting a story and a history. Every fence painting starts at night on the train tracks with a pair of bolt cutters and finds its way into the light of the studio and finally into the gaze of the public domain.

Artist Statement:

“Once upon a time, on a small island called Great Britain, there lived a lady called Margaret Thatcher. Margaret along with her Tory Party ruled the land with an iron fist and squeezed the living life out of its people. Fed up of a decade of draconian rule, the people began to gather and dance their woes away at their own party. They called this the Acid House party.

Race and class barriers were dissolved as the people united and raved as one big family. The Tory party didn’t like this as they weren’t invited, so they invented a law to stop the gathering of 20 or more people, dancing to the sounds of repetitive beats. Techno, Jungle, call it what you want. It had to stop. Whilst this may sound like a children’s horror story, it was in fact or certainly a young adults nightmare. 30 years on, the nightmare continues. Britain is again been torn apart by the right.

The paintings in Acid Reign were made on the beaches of former East Germany. 30 years ago these beaches were patrolled by the military to stop East Germans defecting to the west. Cans of paint were popped and squeezed upon the sand soaked canvas to create the acid rain.

The works seeks new places to hang. Inspired by Foucault’s concept of heterotopia, it finds solace in spaces of otherness. Informed by a youth growing up free, painting graffiti on the trains. Painting in the dark. Surrounded by fences, along the train tracks, in and on derelict buildings. Buildings which housed these parties. Places of abandon and neglect. Again, the work finds itself back in its familiar territory.

Acid Reign is emblematic of the freedom of movement in open spaces without borders. A freedom which is slowly being choked out of the people once again.”  Christopher Stead

Christopher Stead (b. 1974, UK) lives and works in London.

Tangled, torn, popped, squeezed and then hung in spaces of other, the work exists to evade the paradigms of commercial obedience, white cube boredom, and the polarities regimented by cultural hegemony.

Informed by Thatchers dystopian Britain and her Acid House love child, the work explores free movement in spaces without borders.

In 2016 Stead graduated with a First Class BA Hons in Fine Art at the City and Guilds of London Art School, London, where he received the Painter – Stainers Scholarship Prize and Brian Till Art History Thesis Award.

Blind Delon, H ø R D, Leere live + after party Herzschlag

BLIND DELON

Founded in 2016 by Mathis Kolkoz and after releasing several works on Oráculo Records / Bordello A Parigi and some DJ sets around Europe, Blind Delon raised to a multi-art project (3 musicians and a visual composition by the french artist AFB).

With their heads and bags filled with synthesizers from a time they weren’t even born, the band can be found today between a record shop and a cave rave, looking for an aesthetic that is nowhere near dying. Post-Synthwave might be the best words to qualify the project, as the music is a sort of breed between outrageous Pop and cold basslines.

Building a bridge between Pop and Rave music, Blind Delon is making a NOT conventional yet romantic Post-Punk sound.

H ø R D

H ø r d creates electronic music inspired by coldwave, soundtracks, fantasy movies, oscillating between epic compositions, EBM and techno pulse, and also more contemplative tracks.

After performances on his own musical territory, he gradually came to the European synth wave scene, signing a remix for Winter Severity Index (Rome) and performing live in Germany (Wave Gotik Treffen), Belgium, Czech Republic, Swiss, Malta, Italia, Austria, Spain.

His first album “Focus on light” was released 2016 on Anton Maiiovi’s label Giallo Disco Records, and sold out 6 weeks later.
In 2017, his third EP «Futures» is out on Sacred Court, label of electronic artist SNTS.

His upcoming second LP will be out in Avant! Records in September, 2018.

«The label Giallo Disco Records have described the music as “Reverb-Soaked Urban-Gothic Melancholic songs, between synth-shoegaze and violent EBM,” and believe the album will “will resonate strongly with fans of Pornography-era The Cure, Joy Division and classic Nine Inch Nails.” To our ears we hear strains of early Tropic of Cancer and dare we say Pet Shop Boys, and overall, as you’ll be able to tell from the album preview below, it’s a well informed reincarnation of what makes the synth, minimal and no wave genres so appealing today.» JUNO DOWNLOAD (2016)

LEERE

We come from nowhere and move towards emptiness.
Leere is an introvert musical project, trying to express and fill the emptiness inside us. The use of analog and digital sounds of the 80s and the integration of sounds from Berlin, the city that influences her and her music strongly, helps her with that hard task.

Book Launch: “The Graffiti Trucks of Paris” by Marc Vallée

Urban Spree invites you to the Berlin launch party of The Graffiti Trucks of Paris by Marc Vallée.

London based documentary photographer Marc Vallée is back at Urban Spree on Friday 21 July 2017 to launch the second edition The Graffiti Trucks of Paris with a photographic installation of images from the photozine.

“The pictures here highlight how artists have brought the creative activism of subversive graffiti into (or onto) these commercialised infrastructures of urban mobility. As trucks and vans move consumable goods of the elite urban economy around the city, they carry with them the viruses of activism. Like the New York subway trains in the 1970s, the graffiti trucks of Paris are a mobile gallery of graffiti and its affront to the sterile spaces of urban commodity movement.” – Dr. Oli Mould.

With a foreword by human geographer Dr. Oli Mould The Graffiti Trucks of Paris was published in March 2017 and featured in Huck Magazine, HERO Magazine and Tate Britain acquired a copy for its library collection.

In Zaire, Caudal, Alphatrip, Thisquietarmy / Free Entry Show

Sound of Cobra Records and MILK ME present:

In Zaire
Sound Of Cobra Records

In Zaire are closing the chapter opened in 2013 with their critically acclaimed debut full-length „White Sun Black Sun“.
This time, the fever-dance takes on new environments, new worlds, new visions. „Visions Of The Age To Come“ is the aptly named follow-ups name that is to be released on Sound Of Cobra Records this spring.

Packing eight tracks of sprawling all-ends-open psych workouts with a definite rock edge to them, their visions have sharpened to a determined longing into the unknown that is most aware of the preceding waypoints the band has travelled through so far.

At the heart of it all is still the underlying hum of the universe and its infinite vibrations – this is boldly stated with „Hermes Dance“, the albums literal opening track. It functions as a foreboding vision showcasing the essentials of the band: rhythm as key to a broad palette of ever-shifting atmospheres and emotions. As soon as this new chapter is opened, we see In Zaire reaping what they’ve sown in the past with a plethora of high-energy riffs and freewheeling outbursts that communicate with each other in a way that brings the ever so apparent dichotomous dance of chaos and form, of focus and blur to the surface of things.

Where its predecessor was bred in much more blurred musical hotbeds, „Visions Of The Age To Come“ is an expressive kaleidoscope of projections (or perceptions?) coming into focus, and in doing so presenting a rich dialogue with the inner and the outer realities we all have to balance. Through the course of the record we get confronted with sonorous entities constantly trying to work with themselves in order to transform, to find new shapes and to eventually pinpoint the reason of their longing.
Culminating in what is arguably the records key track, „The Seven Sermons Of The Dead“ sees the band leading their newfound approach to the edge with an intense marriage of their rock roots with the outer planes they constantly flirt with – the entrancing main riff moves like a snake in a dizzying journey, which finds its destination in the closing title track.
The intensity lifts, the curtains fall, an ending giving birth to a new beginning – In Zaire’s age to come is a promising one.

Caudal
CAUDAL is a trio featuring Aidan Baker (CA – Nadja, BBS, etc.) on guitar, Gareth Sweeney (IE – Gout) on bass, and Felipe Salazar (CO – Muerte En Pereira, Hypnodrone Ensemble) on drums. Baker’s multi-layered, heavily affected guitar overlays Sweeney and Salazar’s driving, propulsive rhythm section creating music equally influenced by krautrock, post-punk, and spacerock.

thisquietarmy
thisquietarmy (Montreal, Canada) operates at the intersection of ambient drone, doom metal and post-shoegaze melodicism, extending the boundaries of guitar-based experimentation by incorporating melodic motifs over a sea of textural noise, gaining acclaim with fans of darker strains of ambient music and more adventurous practitioners of metal. By mid-2017, thisquietarmy has released over 40 works on more than 30 different labels such as Alien8 Recordings, Aurora Borealis, Consouling Sounds, Denovali Records, Subsound and Shelter Press, including full-length records, EPs and collaborations with peers such as Aidan Baker (Nadja), Scott Cortez (lovesliescrushing), André Foisy (Locrian), Noveller, Syndrome (Amenra), Year of No Light & many more. He also performed 450 gigs over more than 35 countries in Europe, Asia and the Americas with esteemed appearances at festivals such as Red Bull Music Academy, Le Guess Who?, Incubate Festival, Dunk! Festival & Amplifest.

alphatrip
