“Architecture is for me a reflection on our times. We live in a world of discrepancies.“ Hendrik Czakainski

After his widely acclaimed “Urban Investigations“ solo exhibition at Urban Spree Galerie in 2015, Hendrik Czakainski returns to Urban Spree Galerie to further deploy his artistic vision of contemporary urban environments.

Czakainski’s large-scale artworks stem from his vision of globalization, industrialization and demographic chaotic movements. His works define urban agglomerations from the bird’s eye perspective and create a tension between the representation of harsh living conditions and its resulting idiosyncratic aesthetics through his unique abstract vocabulary.

The urban habitats in Czakainski’s works are not faithful replicas of specific places but artistically transformed tableaux.

This change of perspective gives a glimpse of the complex interrelationships in Hendrik Czakainski’s subjective view of the world. Ultimately, these artworks display fictionalities based on facts and an aesthetical construction of authenticity.

Urban Spree Galerie will launch on the Opening Night on Saturday 22.10 an exclusive screen print designed by Hendrik Czakainski for his show. Printed at Urban Spree, the one-color screen print is hand-embellished by the artist and is edited in a limited run of 50 copies. The drawing features an elaborate urban settlement drawn in a peculiar alphabet style, reminiscent of the Sao Paulo pixação. The artist then hand-paints each print individually with watercolor.

Hendrik Czakainski: Urban Investigations

During Berlin Art Week 2015, Urban Spree Galerie presents a new body of works by Berlin based contemporary artist Hendrik Czakainski.

Bild-Ecke-August-2015-Portrait+Rücken

The exhibition will present several large-scale installations as well as artworks from the artist’s new series “Urban Investigations“.

Made with materials such as wood, chromolux paper, metal powders or carton, each patiently crafted installation is an alchemic representation of a cityscape, where dwellers are immersed in environments which are abstracted, where human presence is almost eradicated, where fractures, walls, conflicts and divides abound.

Uncharted territories coalesce with metaphors of our own ecosystem, visions of hostile urban environments and prescience of a looming chaos.

Built out of of wood, carton, concrete, each installation is a representation of a city or a fraction of a city, ranging from pure white industrial estates à la Lewis Baltz to post-apocalyptic environments, where human presence has been almost eradicated, where fractures, walls, conflicts and divides abound.

Itamar Inbar: Play It, Don’t Spray It

On 17.09, in parallel with the opening of Hendrik Czakainski’s “Urban Investigations”, we are showcasing the latest works of Israeli contemporary artist Itamar Inbar. Itamar has been spending the last few months as a Urban Spree Resident Artist and has been working on a few analog installations which we are proud of showing in our Galerie’s “Ecke”

In the era of digitalism, analogue video is a worthless technology, forgotten about also in the art world. The video artist has become a programmer, being surrounded by data, changing and editing digital antimatter.

We change and are changed by the world around us. Like our memories change through time and events. And matter does too. No need to be afraid. Imagine the video artist again as a constructor or sculpturist instead, connecting with his the matter – mentally and physically.

The Video Home System (VHS) is the first technology used by the masses to capture moments, force memories to last. Inbar – as many of his generation – grew up with it, grew into it. Now with contemporary perspective, Inbar is re-examining this media, by turning video tape cassettes (VHS), video players (VCR) and old televisions into kinetic sculptures.

Inbar’s work was shown at Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art (Israel), Fresh Paint Art Fair (Israel), different galleries in Tel Aviv and Berlin.
