Palefroi: “Étalage” Art Residency + Solo Show

“Étalage: stand, stall, barrow,

display, window display,

showcase, showing off

spreading out, falling flat on one’s face / on the floor”

Urban Spree Galerie invites the Berlin-based French duo Palefroi for a month-long residency in our Berlin studio during the first three weeks of July, followed by a week-long residency directly in the gallery, and culminating in a month-long solo show.

Damien Tran and Marion Jdanoff are two French artists currently based in Berlin. Their visual work as a duo is a constant negociation between their respective approaches.. One is formal and abstract, the other narrative and figurative. They are attached to a form of harshness in the lines, to generous proliferation, to spontaneity and wonkiness.

Palefroi is a framework embracing all of their practices: printmaking, self publishing, painting and animated drawings. It is a space of experimentation and collaboration but also a structure supporting both their work as a duo and as individuals.

Following Palefroi’s residency at Urban Spree in July 2018, their solo exhibition Étalage should consist of: wolves, people playing trumpets, a fake tiger, dancing dots, drums solo and wallpapers.

Opening of “Journey”, Bisco Smith’s Residency and Exhibition

Urban Spree Galerie is inviting the NYC-based visual artist Bisco Smith (b.1980) for a 3-week Art Residency at Urban Spree.

During his Berlin residency, Bisco Smith will be creating a whole new body of large scale works that will culminate in a solo show in the galerie from 08.03.2018 to 21.04.2018.

“Journey” will bring the visitor to the universe of Bisco’s largely freestyle and calligraffiti-inspired black-and-white visual beats.

Bisco’s roots lie in music, graffiti, and street art. He works in a variety of formats, including canvas and large outdoor murals, and his style can be characterized as a blend of graffiti deconstruction, gestural abstraction, and lyric-based stylewriting. Made predominantly with a black and white color palette, his art visually captures the rhythms of music and the energy of the moment through its spontaneous marks and abstracted text.

His work is regularly exhibited in major markets and is collected by both national and international collectors.

Opening of SP38 Art Residency Exhibition “Post Vandal 2”

Berlin-based street artist SP38 was invited by Urban Spree Galerie and Boddinale for a special gallery residency alongside the film festival (15-25.02.2018).

After 2 weeks of daily indoor work and street interventions in Friedrichshain, we invite the public to discover the outcome of the art residency over the upcoming weekend together with the artist.

The exhibition opens on Saturday, February 24th from 14:00 to 23:00 and will continue on Sunday February 25th from 12:00 to 23:00. Visitors will be able to acquire the original works on canvas and paper produced during the residency in addition to a selection of screen prints and stickers.

SP38 will also screen print “Post Vandal” tote bags live on Saturday!

Post Vandal 2“, explores the notion of vandalism at the age of post-graffiti.

A relentless urban wanderer and street typographer, SP38 (b.1960) uses different lo-fi techniques (collages, paste-ups, stickers, screenprints, paintings) to imprint his vision of the city and his letters to the walls. Involved at an early stage with the “Figuration Libre” movement in Paris and participant to the first graffiti and street art meeting in 1985 with Vive la Peinture, Speedy Graphito, Futura, Miss Tic, and Blek Le Rat, SP38 has navigated in different squat scenes (including the infamous Berlin’s Tacheles) before moving to Berlin in 1995.

A prime witness of the fast-paced gentrification of the metropolis, his art subtly reveals the fractures of the city through successive campaigns and catchy slogans (“Who kills Berlin?”, “Erased”, “Escape”, “Occupy”, “Vive la Bourgeoisie”, Vive la Crise”…), where the intimate, personal level often collides with the bigger scale.

“ERASED”

When street art pays homage to toying.

“Erased” – “Effacé” – “Ausradiert”

Erased: the walls, the city, the memories, 1UP, childhood, history, words, life, empty monuments, hope, innocence, dreams, signs, green trees.

Erase oblivion, rub out memory.

Erase the work before it’s finished, self-efface one’s own work by covering it with its duplicate.

Erase history, both recent and distant. Erase the cruel crystalline nights with repetitive blood red slogans like so many mute, slowly illegible words. Turn a piece of wall lost in a rigid historical street into an evolving and unfinished artwork that derides content by erasing-replacing the same signs, the same forms, the same useless repetitions.

ERASED was written on a large roll of paper found in the trashcan at a kindergarten. The series ran until
the paper ran out. The first one hit the street the day Fidel Castro died …

Pasted up mainly in Berlin, Paris, Seoul, Wilhelmshaven …

The residency will follow its own strenuous path and will increment itself everyday from 12:00 onwards. The public is invited to witness the progression of the residency. A vernissage is scheduled at the end of the residency, on Saturday and Sunday, 24 & 25th of February from 14:00.

Twoone / Hiroyasu Tsuri Urban Spree Residency in video

A year ago in July 2016, Urban Spree Galerie invited Twoone / Hiroyasu Tsuri for a full 3-week residency in the gallery, a first experiment into using the gallery as a creation and dynamic space rather than a space to hang artworks. The public was welcome to see the creative process and day-to-day progression of the residency. Once the show was complete, it was open to the public for one night and a day and then ended.

Over the course of the residency, Hiro created multiple large format artworks on canvas and plexiglas, a neon installation and 2 large canvases in collaboration with Jun Inoue, in a very energetic live painting session.

In addition to indoor works, Hiro painted the Urban Spree Artist Wall (15 m x 8 m).

Last but not the least, Urban Spree Books released a risographed zine “Berlin 2014-2016“, a collection of portraits sketched in the streets of Berlin during the past two years.

Christiania Krueger filmed the whole performance and we are releasing now his video, divided in 3 parts: indoor artworks, live painting ant mural painting.

Rafael Sliks concludes his Urban Spree Art Residency by a new show opening

Urban Spree Galerie is pleased to invite you to Rafael Sliks’ solo exhibition “Ambivalence“, which concludes a 2-week art residency in Berlin.

Urban Spree Galerie has invited Brazilian visual and graffiti artist Rafael Sliks in March 2017 as part of its Art Residency Program. During two weeks, the São Paulo-based artist has been creating a series of artworks in Berlin, taking the pulse of the german metropolis.

idea2 - copie

Sliks’ artistic universe reflects the tension between the physical chaos present in urban areas and the spiritual introspection he experiences in nature. Both being his main sources of inspiration, Rafael Sliks’ art seeks to harmonize and reconcile cities and nature in a single movement, mixing the colors and vision of nature with the ultra-fast movements of his graffiti skills, and vice-versa. Blurring the lines. Ambivalence.

The art of Rafael Sliks originates in graffiti for which he has developed a renowned style made of astro fatcapped tags and throw-ups. His indoor work is fueled by colour, repetition and overlapping tags, music beats, creating visual enigmas and infinite expanses of universe.

About the artist:

Rafael Sliks, born in the Central Region of Sao Paulo, Brazil, began his artistic career in 1997, where he was strongly influenced by the style of letters in the streets. Nowadays, his artworks can be found in streets around the globe. Sliks has also exhibited his art in galleries in the United States, Europe and Australia.

The Urban Spree Art Residency Program invites Berlin-based and international artists to freely experiment at Urban Spree Galerie during intense 2-week indoor and outdoor painting sessions open to the public and leading to exhibitions.
