The Scandinavian Christmas Market is a two day outside event on 8th & 9th of December celebrated at Urban Spree in Berlin. Plenty of different local food stalls are serving favourite Christmas bites from the North such as Köttbullar, Risgrynsgröt, Lussebullar, Smørrebrød, Pepparkakor, Rød Pølse and much more topped with a good amount of Glögg. Scandinavian Designers will sell little presents, unique handcrafts, fashion and jewelry in all different price ranges.

In existence since 2012 with members Robin Wattie, Mathieu Ball and Louis-Alexandre Beauregard spread across two guitars and drums respectively, BIG|BRAVE sound many magnitudes bigger than one would suspect a trio is capable of. Anticipation gracefully helps to build up every salvo launched by the band, assaulting the eardrum with incredible precision. Their compositions increasingly more refined, juxtaposing sparse minimalism with thunderous feedback, BIG|BRAVE strives to continue pushing the limits of what heavy experimental rock can sound like while maintaining a strong interest in reaching bliss.
Somewhere between the margins of a minimal rock band, experimental outfit and drone aficionados, BIG|BRAVE strives to never belong to anyone given classification. Utilising standard “band” tools such vocals, electric guitars, drums, feedback and amplifiers, B|B explores the possibilities of what a band can sound like while constantly resisting and deconstructing the archetypal characterisations of song structure and form.
Building spectacular, inverted rock constructions that sound many magnitudes bigger than one would suspect a trio was capable of, Montreal’s BIG|BRAVE has been in existence since 2012, with members spread across two guitars and drums respectively. Unhurried and untouchable, BIG|BRAVEpossess that same valued independent spirit which pervades their local contemporaries, and is at the root of their intense and exploratory musical offerings. Their sound lulls and lurches between passages of rhythmic noise pollution and vocal led awe, using considered juxtapositions of force and restraint to warp the senses. Remarkably quiet at times, their ambiance is not one of minimalism, but of dawning, foreboding power with the need to be vented, and when the hot flushes of blighted percussion and monochromatic guitar scrapes arrive, they arrive with triumphant force.

MY DISCO is an Australian music group that was formed between long term 2018 collaborators, Rohan Rebeiro, Benjamin Andrews, and Liam Andrews in 2003.
In 2003, MY DISCO performed their first shows in unconventional all-ages venues in Melbourne.
Late 2003 saw the release of their debut 7″ and marked their first Australian tour. The band soon became renowned for their arduous tour ethic, demonstrated in extensive tours to often far to reach destinations that included remote areas of Australia, Southeast Asia and Mexico.
The release of their debut album ‘Cancer’ in late 2006 marked a new level of emphasis on minimalism. More international and national tours were undertaken, including additional tours to the United States, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
Their second album ‘Paradise’ was recorded in Chicago, Illinois in 2007 with Steve Albini at his studio Electrical Audio. The album is noted as the band’s most refined and minimalist release, capturing their stentorian live sound, with several songs consisting of one note, repetitive single-sentence vocals and long- sustained guitar chords. Drum patterns, although minimal, still offer dance-like, disjointed beats.
2010 saw the release of a new single called “Young”, a limited edition 12″ released through Mistletone Records and re-issue through Blast First Petite, as a lead up to their third and forthcoming album.
2010 Saw the release of the band’s third and most diverse album, ‘Little Joy.’ Their first signing to NYC acclaimed label, Temporary Residence Limited.
2012 MY DISCO released another limited 12″, this time World Wide through Temporary Residence Ltd, entitled “Wrapped Coast.” The record features two extensive racks, with remixes by London’s Factory Floor, and Birmingham based noise-maker Justin Broadrick.
On International Record Store Day in 2013, the band put out a single on one of the World’s most acclaimed independent labels, Sub Pop records. It featured as the label’s 1000th release.
2014/15 saw the band put the finishing touches on their fourth studio album, entitled “Severe” and once again working with Producer and friend Cornel Wilzcek at Electric Dreams Studios in South Melbourne.

The debut from NONN was a stark collection of minimalistic post-punk that marked him as one of the most exciting outputs in the dark Scandinavian scene. After touring the record across Europe and recruiting a full band, the project is back with its second album, XVII, due for release December 7th on Fuzz Club.
Now more of a collaborative effort, with Hannes Nyling and Christian’s brother Alexander joining the fold, the new record deals in a fuller more refined sound and packs a far heftier punch. Where the self-titled debut was a restrained, minimalist affair, XVII opts for slabs of industrial electronics and hard-hitting percussion. The gloomy 80s sensibilities are still there – see the occasional Cure-esque guitars and morose gothic vocals – but on XVII, NONN turn their eyes more towards the electronic affliction of EBM and synth-punk than the polished, more-digestible post-punk that came reverberating out of the decade.
This shift in the band’s sound all boils down to having to reinvent the songs when taking them on the road following the release of their debut, which saw them tour the UK and mainland Europe and play at a number of festivals; from Liverpool Psych Fest and Fuzz Club Eindhoven to, more recently, Endless Daze in South Africa. “Since the last record we’ve been doing a lot of shows which gave us a lot of inspiration. We reworked the old songs to sound a bit fuller and more fun to play live. Having to reinvent all the sounds and instruments from the first album really inspired the direction on XVII,” Christian remarks.
It’s clear that taking the project on the road with a full-band has had a notable effect. Tracks like ‘Clear’, ‘Home’ and ‘Beyond’ see NONN shift their bleak, darkwave-inflected post-punk into something far richer. It’s still got that minimalistic feel and the ear-worm melodies are still there, but it’s more sinister and fleshed out. Though, what truly sets this album apart from the debut is where the band have delved deeper into their electronic side. The industrial stomp of album-opener ‘Pray’ declares the LP’s merciless intent without a guitar in sight; it’s a destructive cut of throbbing synths and desolate drum machine, underpinned by Christian’s monotonous vocals. Partner that with the sparse, haunting electronics of ‘Believe’ and the mechanical synth-punk of ‘Hide’ and it’s clear that NONN are at their best when truly embracing their deeply-cherished Moog Sub Phatty, using it to exorcise the many demons lurking beneath the noise.

Age Eternal is the solo project of german musician and visual artist Lissa Benno. Since 2015, she has been diving into the subconscious to find her own musical language. With reverb-drenched guitars, hypnotic synths and ethereal vocals she creates a dreamy yet heavy haze. Her influences come from a wide variety of musical styles such as Ambient or Krautrock while she is also drawn to pop-music and mysticism.

“Wash Away” is a meditation about change as an universal force that is both fulfilling and terrifying. “Before and throughout the writing of the record I saw myself confronted with significant alterations in my daily life, which I sometimes had a hard time dealing with” says Lissa. The record bows down to that mighty ruthless force that is entrenched into everyone and everything that surrounds us and the potential that lies within it.

The man in black fled across the dessert, and the gunslinger followed. With those words, Stephen King begins his Magnum Opus, The Dark Tower. But the phrase might as well be a graphical, description of the neofolk band Dune Messiah.

Hailing from Copenhagen, the three-piece, which is architectured by Magnus Westergaard, shoots through its listener with visceral honesty. Dark, romantic and personal, the band bares itself completely, engulfing the listener in candid stories of love, loss and mysticism told with both finesse and violence.

Dune Messiah released their debut album, The Iron Oak, in March 2017. On the following tour in Europe and Denmark, the band supported American neofolk pioneer King Dude and Drab Majesty.

On stage, Dune Messiah is a blazing, intense experience. Inspired by all forms of art that deals in immuteability (from Leonard Cohen to Edgar Allan Poe and Federico Fellini), the band inescapably channels its demanding themes. It is both terrifying and beautiful to behold.

But no matter the wickedness displayed live, the monstrosities enforced by the instruments or the heartbreaking truths told through the lyrics, Dune Messiah’s raison d’être is to capture and project honesty. A concept that, like the man dressed in black, fleetingly runs ahead in this barren, truthless world.

The four creative souls in RA get their energy out of despair, loss, frustration and restlessness. They started out as a psychedelic rock quintet but after just one EP they sadly lost one of their members. The loss and their life in Malmö are shown in the, recently released mini documentary – RA – Malmö Mentality. The band didn’t dissolve, instead they canalized their friendship into what should become their debut album – Scandinavia. The album is a whirlwind of punk, feedback, haunting vocals, melodic guitar riffs and pounding bass. The album took the band out on the road and it gained a lot of attention around the world, placing them in some kind of Nordic Noir Post-punk file, together with iceage, Holograms, Lust For Youth etc. Other comparisons were made to Deafheaven, Bauhaus, and A Place to Bury Strangers, now that is gone.

Here we have the first release since the album, and the band has moved forward. This is a more electronic sound landscape, it is gloomy, it is staring, slower, melodic, almost romantic but equally intense. We find more members than the drummer and vocalist Simon, behind the microphone, more voices, less noise, contemplation. This is a band that never rests. All held together by producer Joakim Lindberg that has produced everything with the band up to date.

”We left our rough punk sound and tried to explore another feeling, a more romantic feeling. We gave ourself time to think and reflect and worked more with the song structures.”

for this year’s Berlin Midsommar Festival we have teamed up with the youth campaign of animal rights organisation PETA ZWEI Deutschland e.V. to present Germany’s FIRST VEGAN MUSIC FESTIVAL.

We are massively looking forward to celebrating the longest day of the year in the most beautiful Scandinavian way with thousands of people. Of course maypole, bands & DJ’s, flower wreaths, typical Midsommar games and food & drinks won’t be missing either this year.

This time, we not only mind and balance gender ratio, but also focus on a sustainable and fair attendance of our dearest furry friends and want to show that one can experience a beautiful and delicious festival completely without dead meat. For it, a good amount of local food trucks will whip various vegan delicacies.

If you have always asked yourself how a vegan herring might taste like, this Berlin Midsommar could be a particularly exciting taste experience for you.

Oranssi Pazuzu – Aluk Todolo – Cobalt

“The trick is to avoid all the bands that are bragging about genre breaking or how mind blowing they are and just listen to Oranssi Pazuzu”. This quote from Fenriz’s radio show couldn’t have been a better spot on statement for the phenomenon that is Finland’s Oranssi Pazuzu.
Since their inception, Oranssi Pazuzu has never been satisfied to stick with a formula. Each album has seen the band expand upon its previous incarnation and then, like a supernova, blow it up and transform again into something recognizable but completely new. With their first two albums, they slowly built a fuzz for their unique take on black metal’s pscyhedelia and despite using this genre as a platform it was their third album, Valonielu (2013), that solidified the band’s position as one of the most forward-thinking and interesting metal bands and gave purists a ran for their money. With press and fans praising the brilliance of that album, their live shows established them even more to the point where their live experience could be compared to the ones of Pink Floyd, Swans and Neurosis. And that’s coming from everybody that witnessed them on their tours and festivals performances all around Europe.
Their return on 2016 with their fourth album, Värähtelijä, gives the band much more room to diverge and explore the vast regions of hypnotic progressive psychedelia and the nebulous outer limits of Scandinavian black metal. Songs explode with radiant ultraviolet color and plunge into the deep black darkness of innermost consciousness. If ‘Valonielu’ was the creation of a universe, ‘Värähtelijä’ is the magnification and expansion of its infinite boundaries. With the album ending up on many best albums of the year lists, and not only in the metal circles, 2017 will be the busiest year for the band on stage starting with the “Mental Possessed Tour” where the band brings with them 2 of their peers, Aluk Todolo and Cobalt (on their first European tour) on selected days and making this tour not to be missed!
The “Mental Possessed Tour” will also coincide with the reissues of Oranssi Pazuzu’s backcatalogue including their first 2 albums, which have been sold out since their release, an EP consisting of the band’s material from their 2010 split with Candy Cane and also a limited 10” vinyl with two unreleased songs, which will be sold only on their live dates!
Not meant for genre purists, Oranssi Pazuzu are on a trip all their own; modern electric pioneers on an expedition to unlock the keys to the hidden spaces all around and inside us.

ALUK TODOLO is an instrumental power trio performing Occult Rock since 2004. Their music is a methodical exploration of the powers of musical trance. Part occult black metal fiend and part snide kraut menace, the band conjures rabid obsessive rhythms and abyssal disharmonic guitars, subliminal spiritualist vibrations and bizarre, magick summonings. ALUK TODOLO reduces psychedelic improvisation to a bare, telluric instrumentation, in which dry, spare percussion grievously mines the scrapes, shrieks and shimmer of mutated guitar and bass. The band’s sound is monolithic and stabbing, hypnotic but unpredictable, minimalist yet teeming: a dangerous, noxious coil of all things black.

The name ALUK TODOLO was brought back from a mountainous region of South Sulawesi in Indonesia, it’s an ancient religion with animist beliefs meaning «the Way of the Ancestors». The band toured in USA in 2009 and 2012, Southern Europe in May 2010 (France, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal), Northern Europe in April 2011 with MENACE RUINE (France, UK, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Czech republik, Switzerland) and Eastern Europe in May 2013 with the one man band LUSSURIA from New York (Belgium, Netherlands, Czech Republik, Poland, Austria, Hungaria, Croatia, Solvenia, Italia, France), around the Alps in June 2016 with SUM OF R from Switzerland (France, Switzerland, Germany, Poland, Czech Republik, Hungary, Austria). ALUK TODOLO opened for FAUST (German krautrock pioneers) in New York in October 2009. They have been invited by SUNN O))) to play the Roadburn Festival 2011 in the Tilburg – Netherlands and opened for them in June 2012. They played festivals such as Incubate (Netherlands), Stella Natura (usa), Dark Bombastic Evening (Romania), Mega Therion (Finland), Colmar Jazz Off (France), Luff (Switzerland), le Guess Who ? (Netherlands), Sonic Protest (France), Funkelfug (Austria), Amplifest (Portugal), Chaos Descends (Germany), and will play in 2017 the Stardust IV (New York USA) and the Roadburn (Netherlands).

An archive collection of rare recordings from their first decade will be released in 2017 as well as the 4 albums on tape on Seratusribu records from Indonesia.

Cobalt

War Metal is the most fitting title Cobalt could choose to kick off their career. There is a deep sense of struggle and urgency, a devastating cause that left absolute carnage through its path that the band’s music radiated since the time of their inception. Cobalt, as nature, is red in tooth and claw, and there is no desire of hiding it.

This struggle, this unbroken will to battle and conflict was peaked with the genre-defining Eater of Birds, a testament to the spirit of the US black metal scene. Pouring with aggression and oozing with a primal energy, Cobalt showcased a unique blend of bitter black metal, a traditional approach that was rehashed and in turn rejuvenated. The additions of Americana, folk and noise do not necessarily provide an experimental approach to black metal, but rather a different interpretation of its historic, pure form. The imagery of Hemingway on the cover of Gin makes perfect sense, depicting the literary background of Gin and its influence on Cobalt’s ethos: the perfection of one’s craft, the certainty and conviction to one’s belief and the stoic perspective.

Hemingway’s famously writes: “The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.” This could not be more true for Cobalt, who saw the departure of vocalist Phil McSorley in 2014. Mainman Erik Wunder did not allow this to become the end of the road for his black metal endeavors, and recruiting Charlie Fell (ex-Lord Mantis) has worked wonders for the band and the quality of their releases. In 2016 they proved that they belong at the very top of the food chain releasing what is their finest work in Slow Forever, a double album filled with all the elements that their glorious past has produced, but also with an eye staring at the future and the path that lays ahead. This is Cobalt at its best. Uncompromising, relentless, hungry, constantly hunting and out for blood.
