Urban Spree Books at the Unlock Book Fair

Urban Spree Books will be present at the first Unlock Book Fair in Berlin next weekend with 8 of our self-published titles, as well as a small selection of graffiti and street art zines and books.

Among our titles, we’ll introduce our latest artist book, “Metamorphosis“, released last week.

Unlock Book Fair 2017 will take place at ExRotaprint in Wedding on September 16th and 17th, 2017.

The Fair focuses on the thriving field of graffiti and street art publishing. After a successful first edition in Barcelona last year, the fair moves to Berlin with a special focus on North American railroad cultures: moniker graffiti, hobo culture, train hopping and freight train graffiti.

Berlin Wonderland, subtitled “Wild Years Revisited 1990-1996”, is a self-published monograph and testimony on the post-Cold War Berlin. With 200 photographs from 7 photographers that were active in those years of enchantment, mainly pictures from Ben de Biel, the book is a first-hand testimony about the vitality of the Berlin bohême in the 90’s, the squat movement, a counter-culture that largely structured what represents Berlin today, a state-of-mind between club culture and libertarianism.

Vandals, An Evening with Marc Vallée

Urban Spree Galerie invites you to an exhibition and talk with London-based documentary photographer Marc Vallée on the occasion of the release of his new zine Vandals and the City.

Vandals and the City Marc Vallee-2

With a forward by urban geographer Dr. Oliver Zanetti, Vandals and the City is Marc’s eighth self-published zine and documents a London graffiti crew.

Marc is best known for exploring the tension between public and private space in the context of contemporary youth culture.  His work is visually polemic and rejects the notion of impartiality.  Graffiti, defensible architecture, skateboarding and political dissent are just some of the subjects he has documented over a career of more then twenty years.

Farbzüge: A Photobook on Berlin graffiti

IMG_3894The photographer Emmett E. from Berlin has been documenting graffiti on S-Bahn trains in the past years.

The result is a 144 pages self-published photobook that comes in a limited edition of 250 hand-numbered copies.

There are three different book covers with the regular edition coming out with the yellow stickers that the train drivers affix to the wagons in order to signal that a wagon needs to be cleaned after some graffiti action as well as to prevent graffiti writers to take clean photo shoots of their deeds.

Alternatively, 25 copies come with a blue sticker on the cover (“Wagen nicht geheizt” / “Car not heated”) and 25 with a red one (“Tür Störung” / Door malfunctioning).

The book is available at Urban Spree in Berlin and on the webstore here but in limited quantities.
