Urban Spree Books publish “Metamorphosis”

Urban Spree Books is proud to announce the release of “Metamorphosis”, the second published monograph by the Californian born, Berlin-based visual artist Tavar Zawacki – and the first under his real name.

Metamorphosis is being published to coincide with the opening of the artist’s solo show at Urban Spree Galerie, eponymously titled “Metamorphosis”, on Thursday, September 7th, 2017.

At the time of his first publication (“Passport”, released by Zero+ Publishing in 2011), the artist was going by the street name ABOVE, and was held as one of the pioneers and early influencers of the street art movement. Relocating to Berlin in 2014, the artist went into a deep and creative introspection that led him the next year to divulge his name and face, instead of the high secrecy that has always surrounded his self. He was known never to attend any of his exhibition openings and erected anonymity as a cardinal virtue, and shadows as a tool.

“Metamorphosis” covers Tavar Zawacki’s last 3 years of creative works, from his seminal 2014 “Remix” exhibition in Detroit at Inner State Gallery to his latest and most ambitious show to date at Urban Spree Galerie in September 2017. The book covers all his outdoor murals during that period and illustrates how the artist navigates between his indoor and outdoor works and the influences thereof.

“Metamorphosis” is a very personal account of Tavar’s creative process and thinking, where painful disruptions are essential to create something new and meaningful.

Tavar Zawacki has been showcasing his work in galleries and institutions around the world since 2005. He is a resident artist of Urban Spree in Berlin since 2 years. His solo show, “Metamorphosis”, runs from 07.09.2017 to 08.10.2017 at Urban Spree Galerie in Berlin.

The book is published by Urban Spree Books and is available on the Urban Spree website here as pre-order and in our Berlin shop from the 07.09.2017. All orders will be shipped after the 07.09.2017.

We have a few rare signed copies of the artist’s previous book “Passport” available in the shop.

Last week to see Rylsee’s Solo Show

This is the last week to see Rylsee’s solo show “Other Inbox” at Urban Spree in Berlin. The Swiss artist delivers a playful journey into modern typography and glitches. Signed copies of his monograph, “How To Play With Letters, are also available in the Urban Spree Bookshop.

The exhibition is open from Tuesday until Sunday, September 3rd (12:00 – 19:00). Video by Gabriel Sousa.

Rylsee’s new monograph “How to Play with Letters” available at Urban Spree

In parallel with his solo show “Other Inbox” at Urban Spree Galerie until Sunday 03.09.2017, the Swiss-born and Urban Spree-based artist Rylsee has just published a new book with Moleskine in Milan.

His first monograph, “How to Play with Letters” is a tour de force in modern typography, illustrating his past 5 years in Berlin with playful, witty & catchy lettering experiments.

For Rylsee, after stations in Geneva and Vancouver, Berlin marked a shift away from his early illustration days to a focus on designing, polishing and scratching letters, a field which is the main focus of this book.

Rooted in graffiti and skateboarding, infused by hiphop, Rylsee’s universe is cool fantasy supplemented by a sharp sense of composition and balance.

His notorious sketchbooks reveal his everyday practice of finding catchy sentences and creating new styles and fonts where letters – unlike the classical art of calligraphy – become glitchy, virused, and melt, albeit always irresistible and funny.

This distorted universe or « dystorpic » as Rylsee would put it – exists by the will of a typographer who blurs the lines of reality and create his own calligraphic spell.

Rylsee recycles his everyday experiences and thoughts and turn them into proverbial low-fi sentences such as « Never trust someone who doesn’t like pizza », « I wish you could be as cute as your profile picture » or « Too shy to rap » to name but a few.

Using only his drawing skills, Rylsee becomes the modern alchemist, plotting numerous optical illusions in 2D to make them look like native 3D. In Rylsee’s universe, 2D and 3D coalesce, but the craftsman, the pen, and the illusion maker takes the lead.

Urban Spree Bookshop in Berlin has signed copies of the book.
