Various & Gould: Identikit Generator

In 2007, the Berlin-based artist duo Various & Gould launched the Identikit series, a reflection on multiple identities, through a choice of faces & words composing endless variations and contradictions.

10 years later, the duo is invited by the Leipzig Book Fair 2018 to introduce an updated version of the series, focused on Europe and its numerous crises and issues.

This project discusses the topic of immigration, identities and clichés. Identities are highly complex and always diverse whereas clichés are the embodiment of simplification.

To visualize this issue, Various & Gould have chosen a technique known from children’s books. Portraits of prominent personages and words are horizontally cut into strips enabling to rearrange them in endless variations. There are numerous different options – some make sense, some do not, but most invoke images confronting the viewer with own stereotypes and clichés.

The duo has developed a digital version, where users can compose their own motives and then publish online. So far, the version uses only german words but an english version should be available soon.

Pankow, Tara in Tibet live // Herzschlag

PANKOW (IT)

Pankow, founded in Florence back in 1981, are one of the very first electronic/industrial acts coming out from Italy. The founding member Maurizio FM Fasolo and his five co-band members at that time created sounds inspired by the likes of Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire and early Kraftwerk.

After various line-up changes and the arrival of charismatic lead-singer and poet Alex Spalck, the project started to become noted also abroad and a first live-appearance in Berlin in 1984 marked the start of a long ongoing and successful career for the band.

Following a few cassette-releases and compilation appearances, Kindergarten Records – in collaboration with Polygram – released a first 4-tracks EP in 1984, that included the first more accessible, EBM-Electro-like tracks (even though the term ‘EBM’ was not ‘invented’ by that time…): songs like ‘God’s Deneuve’ and ‘Wodkachaos’ became major hits in Italy. The first LP came in 1987 on Contempo Records, and was produced by Adrian Sherwood.

Since 2016 Pankow started to collaborate with the Canadian label Artoffact by releasing their first official cassette (“Throw out Rite”, 1984) and a 10 “vinyl (Times) with the first songs released only in some Italian compilations before and a couple unpublished ones.

The band is currently active and based in France/Belgium with the frontman singer Bram Declercq.

TARA IN TIBET (IT)

Berlin-based Tara in Tibet is a project of Alessio de Felice, co-runner of label She Lost Kontrol records and owner of Last Europa Kiss records.

His perfomances are waving between noise and groovy industrial, with a touch of esoterism.

Highly recommended for fans of occult sex parties, Italian police movies and dirty raw esthetics.

TIQ

TIQ is a minimal-synth party loved and supported by different alternative scenes. DJ-sets are rigid, cold, rough-edge, blind-alley and the drum machine beats always like a metronome. No matter if the sound comes from the past, the present or the future, we are more and more devoted to select the best minimal-synth-wave music, so called “quadratic wave”.

Quadratic-wave is a word game and a concept from sound physics too, but the best way to catch it is to dance it, and the best way to dance it is by being concentrated and confined in a quadrangle as Die Tödlich Doris sang in their song Tanz im Quadrat: “Wir tanzen im Viereck, wir tanzen konzentriert”.

The Morlocks

THE MORLOCKS (US/DE) plus GHOST LEE (Berlin)

plus djs afterparty: Kiky Kreemchese (Radio Momento 60) plus Alex Maiorano (Riviera Boys)

THE MORLOCKS
BRING ON THE MESMERIC CONDITION
(Hound Gawd Records/Rough Trade)

As it says in the Bible, “ask and you shall receive” The Morlocks are proud to announce ( for all ye faithful ) the release of their new LP. “BRING ON THE MESMERIC CONDITION” on “Hound Gawd Records. Slated for release early Summer 2018. Recorded By Alaska Winter at various secret locations in Germany ,

East meets West (Berlin). Mixed and mastered by the notorious “Jim Diamond “ of Dirtbombs fame, to give it that special “Motor City” grit and grease that is required on a Morlocks record! Alas it´s been a while since the release of “The Morlocks Play Chess”, “BRING ON THE MESMERIC CONDITION” features something never before offered on a Morlocks LP , all original songs!!!!!

Both as a band and as individuals, The Morlocks have earned their stripes on the rock and roll circuit. Through break-ups, break downs, personnel changes, changing cities and shifts in popular culture, The Morlocks have continually grown stronger at what they do best even as they died their many deaths. In the process, The Morlocks have built up a die-hard following and originality. Where others would have bled out long ago, The Morlocks get stitched up and keep going.

Surprising, then, that in 1999, Spin Magazine printed an inaccurate story declaring the death of their energetic, charismatic lead singer Leighton Koizumi (also fronting the Gravedigger V). Needless to say, Leighton (far from being dead) continues to lead the charge, a duty he has held since the band’s debut LP Emerge. The Morlocks have continued to perform and make records, a number of which have been featured prominently in movies, television shows and video games.

Currently based out of Düsseldorf , Leighton has inlisted a who´s who European fuzz masters… Starting with Rob Louwers – drums ( Fuzztones, Q-65, Link Wray) Oliver Pilsner -Bass ( Fuzztones, Cheeks, Montesas, Magnificent Brotherhood) Bernadette – Guitar ( Sonny Vincent, Humpers) and Marcello Salis ( Gravedigger V, Hangee V), The Morlocks have been secluded in their secret European lair . planning and plotting a new set along with classic fan favorites! You can expect a whole new trip, including new recordings, new tours, new merch, and a new “live” show guaranteed to melt your mind, make your ears bleed, put some boogie in your backseat, and leave you with an intense feeling of wanting more.

GHOST LEE
Ghost Lee is a new musical collective based in Berlin, masterminded from the psychedelic genius of Tito Lee (Tito and the Brainsuckers, Electric Flashbacks, Leighton Koizumi), eccentric performer and guitar player devoted to the most obscure, intense magnetic sounds from the psychedelic vaults. The band performs a kind of soft psychedelia in the style of West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, Orient Express, Spacemen 3, blended with fuzz ripping influences in the most genuine sixties garage tradition. The band members feature Adrian Gray(Gang Zero, The Dark) on bass and Silver Luke on drums (Brainsuckers, Dead Lovers).
Ghost Lee first album, “Ghostly” is on its way to be released.
Keep your mind open and your fuzzbox on 10!

La Vallée/BAF at Urban Spree

Urban Spree invites our Brussels-based friends from LaVallée and Brussels Art Factory for a week-end long mini festival in Berlin focused around arts, music, workshops, and performances!

Opening on Friday 01.06, we start the evening with the Opening of “Balance”, a solo presentation of new works by the famed belgian duo Hell’o in our main galerie space. Running in parallel with their retrospective museum solo show at the BAM in Mons (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Mons, Belgium), “Balance” brings a new series of paintings on canvas and drawings on paper to the Berlin audience. Hell’o will also sign their new monograph “Untitled Oddyssey”, published early May by Maison CFC – éditions & librairie. Urban Spree Prints will also release 2 screenprints specially made by the duo for the occasion.

The Brussels-based collectives Farm Prod and Ice Screen will display recent original works and prints in our Galerie “Ecke” and run various screen printing workshops during the weekend.

Fred Penelle & Yannick Jacquet from the collective Antivj will present “Mécaniques discursives”, an immersive installation mixing etchings, prints and video projections.

On Saturday evening, the visual and street artist Vincent Glowinski a.k.a. BONOM and the drummer Teun Verbruggen will present their performance “Duo à l’encre” in our garden. Bonom will sign his 2 published monographs on Saturday in our bookshop.
