Yuto Yamada: Berlin/Tokyo II

Urban Spree Galerie presents ‘Berlin/Tokyo ll’, a photographic exhibition by Berlin-based Japanese photographer Yuto Yamada, opening on 17.11.2017 in our Galerie Ecke.

Berlin/Tokyo ll opens on the same night as Victor Ash’s 10-year Anniversary of the Astronaut Cosmonaut wall and will run until 10.12.2017.

Berlin and Tokyo are the two favorite topics of urban photographer Yuto Yamada and the subject of this exhibition one year after presenting his “Berlin/Tokyo” series at Urban Spree: Berlin as the city where he now lives and works since several year and the city of his childhood and youth, Tokyo.

In his ongoing series ‘Berlin/Tokyo’ he takes us on a journey to the dirty, abandoned side of Berlin with all its graffiti, destruction and decay, in absolute contrast with the modern and shiny photos of Tokyo’s illuminated cityscape, a stunning and surreal opposition.

‘BERLIN / TOKYO II’ is a photographic journey and modernist tale of two apparently opposed metropolises, the hi-tech Tokyo and the lo-fi Berlin.

Zarkoff [Croatia]

Zarkoff is an electro-techno-industrial producer/dj known for solo work and many collabs, such as Sumerian Fleet, FFFC, Kali Jugend, Lab Personnel, releases with Popsimonova, Nao Katafuchi etc.

Apart from his own productions, he runs a studio called Sensorium and works as a mastering engineer for established underground labels such as Creme Organization, R Zone, Jericho One, Raw Paper Records, Raw Culture, Repartiseraren etc.

His post punk album Sweet Obsolete (Unknown Pleasures Records) reached #1 on European Alternative Charts in 2015 and after that a few electro/acid vinyl EPs followed (Pioneers EP on Endless Illusion, Iron flute EP on Return To Disorder and Toxicology EP on Gooiland Elektro) Sumerian Fleet released 2 albums on Dark Entries, „Just Pressure“ and „Pendulum“, and his collab project Lab Personnel released an LP called Recreation on Medical Records.

His latest releases (as Zarkoff and member of Lab Personnel) have mostly been results of jams in an abandoned chemical lab that Zarkoff and his collaborators were using for several years. This period is now finished and Zarkoff is embarking on European tour this winter.

Particle Kid feat. Willie Nelson‘s son Micah Nelson + HEKLA

Particle Kid, feat. Micah Nelson (son of Willie Nelson, member of Neil Young‘s band) + HEKLA – Berlin doom pop (swelling synth sounds, dramatic rythms and wavy guitar washes) LIVE!

Particle Kid (experimental folk rock | US)

Particle Kid is the experimental musical identity of Los Angeles-based musician and visual artist J. Micah Nelson. As Particle Kid, Micah Nelson has created a multi-dimensional musical universe all his own, crafted with immense ambition, inventive production techniques, and strikingly emotive song craft. Nelson achieves the near impossible by sounding both familiar and oddly modern, with the spirits of future folk, low rider funk, riff rock, power pop, lysergic Americana, flower punk, and progressive jazz fusion all somehow woven together with deep-rooted melodies, unique improvisational elements, and remarkably intricate arrangements.

HEKLA (doom pop | Berlin)

Fronted by two Swedish cousins, HEKLA is a quartet stemming from Berlin’s musical melting pot. Inspired by everything from Scandinavian folk music to 80s synthwave adventures, they bring you along for a ride into the abandoned beach towns and forgotten volcanoes of their minds.
In both music and lyrics, grandiose dreams face their constant companion, destruction. Never shying away from the drama, HEKLA sing about the obsession and madness in us all.
HEKLA released their self-titled debut album in 2017. Their new EP, Boulevards, is out in June 2018.

Pablo Tomek: Solo Show „Thank You Boss“

As part of its Art Residency Program, Urban Spree Galerie has invited the Paris-based artist Pablo Tomek in February 2017 to invest its Berlin space for 2 weeks to create large-format artworks in situ.

A couple of months after his participation to the Palais de Tokyo’s Lasco Project, Tomek is invited by Urban Spree in Berlin to propose „Thank You Boss“, a solo show around 5 large-format artworks and installations.

PABLO TOMEK SHOW OPENING "THANK YOU BOSS" OPENS ON 18.02

For Tomek, the construction and building sites scattering the city are endless sources of materials and plastic inspiration, whereby the relationship between building and demolition seems like a paradigm of the modern world, an aesthetics prone to détournements and dérives.

The materials flow in, the materials come into confrontation, the colours are damaged, the accidents shape, and things are born.
The exhibition „Thank You Boss“ is a homage to the unknown and undetected aesthetics and „paintings“ of construction workers, to the graffiti artists who ransack palisades, to the glass cleaners, to the roadside accidents that reshape the space, to the posters paste-ups, and time, that pulls them away.
Tomek’s first published monograph, „Teren Alchemia„, published by Classic Paris in January 2017, will be on display in the Urban Spree shop.

About the artist:

The art of Pablo Tomek (b. 1988 in Paris) originates in graffiti for which he has developed a rough experimental approach, which is further refined in his studio practice. Tomek studies the relationships between graffiti and abstract expressionist painting, the techniques and aesthetics of manual street workers (whiting with sponges, use of construction materials, remix of the fluorescent marks made by architects, abandoned objects, high-pressure cleaning tools), in a way to transmute objects and mundane practices into a new purpose and meaning, against a backdrop of an ever growing gentrification process.

His art stems from the hectic repetition of the gesture that drive the mechanical, anonymous practices of tagging and cleaning, which are part of the daily life of cities. By confronting the body and painting with space, between constant energy and fatigue, Pablo Tomek creates a painting which toys with its own destruction, resulting in a dance of pictorial ghosts.

Pablo Tomek’s work has been presented at several solo and group shows: at the galerie du jour agnès b. in Paris (“Etat des lieux”, 2013), the Frac Nord – Pas de Calais (“Toy”, 2014), in an illegally occupied industrial wasteland (“Expressiv Tag Painting”, Pantin, 2015), at the HLM in Marseille (“Honte”, 2015), the Bateau Lavoir (“Après Coup”, 2015), the Mini Galerie in Amsterdam (“Worker Games”, 2016), the Lasco Project #7 (Paris, 2016) where he produced a 500 sqm outdoor mural at the Palais de Tokyo, and Urban Spree Galerie in February 2017, following a 2-week in situ residency.
