Futura: The 5 Elements

Urban Spree Galerie and Art-Together present: „Futura: The 5 Elements“, a solo exhibition of new works by Lenny McGurr, a.k.a. Futura 2000.

The Opening Reception will be in Berlin on Friday January 11th, 2019, in presence of the artist.

The exhibition is one of the largest solo exhibitions of Futura to date with more than 60 original paintings on display.

„The 5 Elements“ is not a retrospective show. On the contrary, Futura worked specifically on a large museum-style conceptual exhibition, tackling the ambitious theme of the Creation of the Universe, confronting himself to the cosmos, the planets, the infinitely small, the Big Bang and the fundamental elements, producing a corpus of works that becomes a personal path to the exploration of the universe and of course of Futura’s internal galaxy.

The works are displayed starting by the Big Bang, going through the birth of the solar system and to our perception of the 4 elements.

The works have been produced in early 2018 in Lille, France, during a  residency organized by Art-Together, a newly launched ambitious platform for the development of urban contemporary arts.

A set of 4 exclusive silk screen prints are being released on the Opening Night. The set is based on the painting series „Pure“. Each 8-color screen print is hand-pulled by Dolly Demoratti (Mother Drucker/Urban Spree Studio), signed and numbered by Futura. The 50 x 50 cm prints are only sold as a limited edition of 100 sets.

A 128-page companion book titled „Futura, les 5 éléments“, will also be released in Berlin on the Opening Night and will be signed by the artist. More than an exhibition catalogue, the book intends to share the creative path of the residency and provides scientific explanation to the series of paintings.

About the artist:

Futura is an American visual artist, born Lenny McGurr in NYC in 1955. He is recognized as one of the first modern-era graffiti writers, and the pioneer of the abstract graffiti genre. Passionate about science fiction, he chose his moniker „Futura 2000“ when he started graffiti at 15 in reference to Stanley Kubrick’s movie „2001 – A Space Odyssey“.

He started painting the NYC subways in the early 1970s and was the first writer to paint a whole car in the abstract graffiti style which became his signature. He was part of the famed exhibition „New York/New Wave“ in 1981 at the P.S.1 (Institute for Art and Urban Resources, Inc.) together with Basquiat (a.k.a. SAMO), Haring, Crash, Quick, Dondi and Kenny Scharf. He had numerous solo and group exhibitions and is also actively involved in street wear and fashion.

Blind Delon, H ø R D, Leere live + after party Herzschlag

BLIND DELON

Founded in 2016 by Mathis Kolkoz and after releasing several works on Oráculo Records / Bordello A Parigi and some DJ sets around Europe, Blind Delon raised to a multi-art project (3 musicians and a visual composition by the french artist AFB).

With their heads and bags filled with synthesizers from a time they weren’t even born, the band can be found today between a record shop and a cave rave, looking for an aesthetic that is nowhere near dying. Post-Synthwave might be the best words to qualify the project, as the music is a sort of breed between outrageous Pop and cold basslines.

Building a bridge between Pop and Rave music, Blind Delon is making a NOT conventional yet romantic Post-Punk sound.

H ø R D

H ø r d creates electronic music inspired by coldwave, soundtracks, fantasy movies, oscillating between epic compositions, EBM and techno pulse, and also more contemplative tracks.

After performances on his own musical territory, he gradually came to the European synth wave scene, signing a remix for Winter Severity Index (Rome) and performing live in Germany (Wave Gotik Treffen), Belgium, Czech Republic, Swiss, Malta, Italia, Austria, Spain.

His first album „Focus on light“ was released 2016 on Anton Maiiovi’s label Giallo Disco Records, and sold out 6 weeks later.
In 2017, his third EP «Futures» is out on Sacred Court, label of electronic artist SNTS.

His upcoming second LP will be out in Avant! Records in September, 2018.

«The label Giallo Disco Records have described the music as “Reverb-Soaked Urban-Gothic Melancholic songs, between synth-shoegaze and violent EBM,” and believe the album will “will resonate strongly with fans of Pornography-era The Cure, Joy Division and classic Nine Inch Nails.” To our ears we hear strains of early Tropic of Cancer and dare we say Pet Shop Boys, and overall, as you’ll be able to tell from the album preview below, it’s a well informed reincarnation of what makes the synth, minimal and no wave genres so appealing today.» JUNO DOWNLOAD (2016)

LEERE

We come from nowhere and move towards emptiness.
Leere is an introvert musical project, trying to express and fill the emptiness inside us. The use of analog and digital sounds of the 80s and the integration of sounds from Berlin, the city that influences her and her music strongly, helps her with that hard task.

Roman Klonek: Cut the Crap

Urban Spree Galerie presents „Cut the Crap„, a new series of woodcut printings by Düsseldorf-based visual artist Roman Klonek that will be exhibited in our Galerie Ecke.

The Opening Cererony will take place on Friday, September 7th, from 19:00 and occurs during Berlin’s Urban Art Week (05-12 September 2018).

Roman Klonek, born in Kattowitz/Poland and now based in Dûsseldorf, has a spot for old fashioned cartoons and modern block printing styles. In the 1990s he studied Graphic Arts in Düsseldorf and discovered a passion for woodcut. Since 15 years now, he is doing posters with a wide range of whimsical creatures, mostly half animal/half human, preferential in awkward situations, a bizarre balancing act between propaganda, folklore and pop.

Last Dominion Lost / Anemone Tube / Dead Normal

13 EURO PRESALE 15 EURO ON THE DOOR

LAST DOMINION LOST AUS/DE

Last Dominion Lost has existed since 1992, formed out of the ashes of Merge (a project created by Dominik Guerin, founding member of SPK, and Jon Evans).
With the inclusion of John Murphy (ex-SPK, Whitehouse) the transition was complete. In April of 1992 the recording sessions for what was to become „The Tyranny of Distance“ began (released on Germany’s Tesco Records).

16 years later, the opportunity arose to reform the slumbering project. With the welcome addition of Ash Wednesday (Crashlands, Einstürzende Neubauten) and Julian Percy (Ratbag) the reactivated band began recordings that would ultimately surface on the 2014 album „Towers Of Silence“.

After the sudden tragic death of core member John Murphy in 2015, veteran industrial musician Till Brüggemann became the third member, bringing a new palette of sounds to the creative process. The group are currently finalising their fifth album.

ANEMONE TUBE DE
Anemone Tube was founded 1996 in South-Germany; since 2010 based in Berlin. The audio works of Anemone Tube are a unique blend of dark ambient, noise, industrial and sound-art with a strong psychogenic impact. The use of constantly shifting and altering sounds and moods is possibly one of the most intriguing things about the audio creations of Anemone Tube. Since 2007 Anemone Tube has been working on „The Suicide Series“. To this field recordings made in China and Japan build a conceptional basis. In a poetic way Anemone Tube combines analytical realism of the phenomenal world with buddhist psychology and nihilist rhetoric influenced by the works of Pier Paolo Pasolini, H.P. Lovecraft, J.G. Ballard and Hayao Miyazaki.

Releases on Auf Abwegen (DE), Raubbau/Ant-Zen (DE), Peripheral Records (GB), Silken Tofu (BE), Black Horizons (USA), La Esencia (ES) and The Epicurean (DE). Live performances since 2008 with Dave Philips (CH), Machinefabriek (NL), Post Scriptvm (USA), Troum (D), Cut Hands (UK), IRM (SWE), BJ Nilsen (N), Anenzephalia (D), Ke/Hil (D), Wraiths (UK), Svartsinn (N), Sudden Infant (CH), The (Law-Rah) Collective (NL), Hybrids (B), Shift (UK), Schloss Tegal (USA), Human Larvae (D), AX (UK), Inade (D), Trepaneringsritualen (SWE), Of The Wand And The Moon (DK), etc.

DEAD NORMAL UK/CAT -Berlin debut-

Somewhere in between early industrial, raw punk and murky techno, Dead Normal is a three-headed unit from Barcelona playing, in their own words, “noisy electronics and rants”. Even though it’s not easy to label Dead Normal, some influences can be traced behind their abrasive sound: the pulsating rythm of Sucide, the crude lyricism of Sleaford Mods, the challenging attitude of The Fall…

Dead Normal have won a reputation for their intense live performances. Since their foundation in 2016, they have been gigging relentlessly, sharing the bill with hardcore punk bands, synthpop combos and powerelectronics acts, including artists such as The KVB and Sutcliffe Jügend.

“There Is Nothing Left But The Enjoyment Of Senseless Destruction” is Dead Normal’s first album, soon to be released on Harbinger Sound.

Force Field 2-Night Event w Gigsta & Aquarian

This time for the course of a full weekend, Force Field is insanely excited to present Gigsta and Aquarian, both masters of their own distinct sounds.

Host of Cashmere Radio’s Frictions show Gigsta + recent Bedouin Records’ signee Aquarian, will be presenting two very different interpretations of bass-heavy sounds, from skeletal riddims to juicy bangers and beyond.
Our one-off weekend will also be presenting several debuting projects: Two first-ever duo sets by Aquarian b2b RO Zar + a first Force Field resident b2b between RO Zar and Misantrop (latter of who will also be playing a solo set). Finally we’re excited to present Wesley, geriatric-digger yet tenderfoot-DJ, Force Field confidant Jonathan Clark.

GIGSTA (03.08)
A regular host on Cashmere Radio with her show Fictions, Gigsta has been working across many fields of musical theory and practice over the last decade. She is currently writing a PhD on Techno Criticism and spends all of her time away from the library, dancing, playing and digging for sounds. Her sets bring together a variety of genres and she explores different tempos, rhythms, colors and sounds with a specific fascination for lower frequencies.

AQUARIAN (04.08)
Aquarian makes raw, arresting and immediate music aimed squarely at the dance floor. His sound draws from both sides of the Atlantic, combining Drexcyian electro, old school jungle and UK grime with vertical singularity. The Canadian born, Brooklyn/Berlin based artist broke out with a trio of records for UNO NYC, with his 2014 self titled EP cementing him as an artist to watch while landing him a mix on Resident Advisor’s coveted podcast series. Since then he has released records through his own culinary-rave imprint, Hanger Management (described by RA as “Aquarian at his best: searing club melodrama, built from whip-crack breaks, ground-splitting bass and acrid techno adornments), also releasing a lauded experimental cassette for Quiet Time Tapes, a standout track on Allergy Season x Discwoman’s Physically Sick compilation and mixing for Rob Booth’s Seminal Electronic Explorations series.
2018 saw his debut collaborative EP with Deapmash (Leisure System) as AQXDM on UAE’s Bedouin Records with early support from the likes of Ben UFO, Objekt, Avalon Emerson, Dax J, and Emmanuel and championed by the likes of Pitchfork, Mixmag and Resident Advisor. The former wrote: “…scrupulously de-signed, hi-def…crisp and propulsive, “Aegis” is more than a slice of dark and unforgiving techno; it’s some sorely needed dancefloor euphoria.”

FORCE FIELD
Force Field is an event venture gathering the sonic perspectives of selectors RO Zar and Misantrop.
Anything goes—it’s a vibrant melting pot of divergent sounds and disparate tempos, orbiting around bass diasporas, off-kilter riddims, the hardcore continuum, a spectrum of euphoria, modern angularity, oddball gems, and further filth. Cheeky fun for the dancers who like to be kept on their toes.
