Berlin- Praha Barter

After the first exhibition, titled « Praha Berlin Barter » (March/April 2019) which was hosted by Urban Spree in Berlin, the gallery is this time being hosted by Trafo Gallery in Prague in a new group exhibition called « Berlin Praha Barter« .

Berlin Praha Barter

Preview: 16.05.2019
Exhibition: 17.05. – 23.06.2019

Curated by Pascal Feucher (Urban Spree)

In this second round, we have invited 11 visual artists of the Urban Spree family to exhibit artworks at Trafo Gallery:

The artists are representative of the new Berlin scene that emerged since the Fall of the Wall, starting with the precursor – Jim Avignon – quite known for his painted decors of many of the Berlin squatted clubs of the early 90’s and large historic murals (East Side Gallery) and whose remixed cubist/pop art/Neue Sachlichkeit aesthetics are iconic of the Berlin art scene.

Going along the figurative trail, Marion Jdanoff (half of the duo Palefroi) develops a highly poetic and fairytale-like universe, fueled with middle age tales, strange characters, fabled animals in a rich palette of colors. Fabian Warnsing paints large-sized canvases in a faux-naïf style, creating still life paintings, urban landscapes and everyday scenes.

The graphite drawings of Lars Wunderlich are part of a series from 2017 titled « East German Realities », whereby the artist applies his process of distortion and glitches to scenes witnessed in the Eastern parts of Germany where nationalism is still a vivid reality.

Sebas Velasco explores the remnants of the Eastern bloc in a series of oil paintings and drawings based on scenes from Yugoslavia and elsewhere, Plattenbau, old cars, graffiti, and neon hotel signs. An urban/architecture thematic which has been magnified over 20 years by EVOL with his stencils on outdoor electric boxes and on cardboard.

Going further, Hendrik Czakainski creates 3D large-scale post-architectural panels which are radical anatomical explorations of the urban body. His works are impressive, immersive, chaotic urban scenes captured from above, on a bird’s eye view perspective.

Besides figurative and architecture-inspired works, a strong line at Urban Spree has always been « post-graffiti abstraction », i.e. using the codes, techniques, roots, flow and philosophy of graffiti, where the letter becomes an abstraction, a substance.

While Stohead is closer in some instances to the true form of the letter (calligraphy, handstyle, overwriting), he has always experimented beyond it, trying to deconstruct and dissolve the Letter in a post-graffiti approach. Theresa Volpp‘s practice is more focused on the very subject of abstract art and bears only a faint distance to graffiti, although some form of automatic writing exists in her work, in a pre-graffiti way, as if abstract art is trying to reconnect with a certain flow but before the invention of graffiti..

Christian August creates multiple layers of grey colors by erasing, scratching, repainting, and finally achieving a wall texture (in the scratchy meaning of Dubuffet and Brassaï in the early 20th century), then completing his work by a stunning dash of ultramarine color, the artist’s persistent signature. Johannes Mundinger has also strong roots in wall painting and creates delicate abstract works in subdued tones, large shapes and blocs, stunning and contemplative abstract landscapes.

Oscillating between abstract and figurative art, Berlin Praha Barter shows a diversity of approaches and styles, seemingly loosely connected but united by an undercurrent practice of wall painting and shared values.

Urban Spree Galerie was created in Berlin-Friedrichshain in 2012 as a 400 sqm « artist-run » space with the objective of discovering and promoting the emerging international wave of post-graffiti painters and artists, with a strong focus on local talents.

The gallery is an essential part of Urban Spree, a 1.700 sqm independent multi-cultural complex comprising a Biergarten, a concert room, a bookshop, 5 artist studios, a screen printing studio, itself set in a 70.000 sqm postindustrial creative compound in the heart of Berlin (R.A.W.).

The gallery benefits from its large urban grassroots ecosystem and offers its invited artists an ideal space for experimentation through ambitious on-site residencies and monthly exhibitions that usually involve painting the outside walls of the compound.

It is armed with these values of generosity and openness, shared with Trafo Gallery, that we together decided to initiate a gallery exchange.

St. Patrick’s Festival Berlin 2018

Dear friends of St. Patrick’s Festival Berlin,

We are delighted to announce that SPFB is officially BACK WITH A BANG on Saturday, March 17th, 2018!!! #patisback

We have joined forces with Urban Spree in Friedrichshain to host our special day in March!

Urban Spree, the cultural icon on the old RAW Grounds beside Warschauer Str, is the perfect venue for our comeback special! We’ll have Irish streetfood vendors serving delicious Irish drinks and food, live music, Irish dancing, and so much more. Make sure you join our Facebook event to stay up to date with announcements!

Unfortunately we didn’t receive permission for the parade this year, but not to worry! We’ll open the gates at Urban Spree from 13:00 so rugby fans will be able to watch the first of 3 live games in the 6 Nations Championship. The highlight will be England vs Ireland (k.o. 15:45) shown on big screens.

We have invited Setanta Berlin GAA to build an indoor GAA section showcasing the very best of Gaelic football and hurling. We will have kids activities, such as Irish Storytelling, arts and crafts, face-painting and the very special opportunity to dance with our lovely Irish dancers.

We are also very pleased that members of Berlin-Ireland Pro Choice Solidarity will be joining us to raise awareness about the upcoming abortion referendum in Ireland and to promote the #hometovotecampaign.

We have a packed schedule of diverse, Berlin-based Irish musicians for the FREE concert in the garden. 4 Minute Mile are sure to set the tone early when they kick things off at 14:00. We will then have the opening ceremony at 15:00 featuring the incredible dancers from Irish Beats Dance Company Berlin. St. Patrick himself is also due to make an appearance 🙂

2-piece Irish folk group Slí na Sláinte will have a more calming influence on proceedings when they take to the stage at 16:00. After the Irish rugby match (17:30), headline act Joey Ryan and his band will take to the stage performing a mix of his own material as well as Irish rock classics. Kilkelly will then perform some folk and blues numbers before Seán Óg and David Flowerkraut treat us to some classic Irish ballads.

The Afterparty featuring a traditional Céilí Mór Irish dance followed by renowned Irish DJs follows on from the concert and will keep revellers moving until the wee hours 🙂

Eröffnung SP38: Post-Vandal 2 Kunst Residency

Berlin-based street artist SP38 was invited by Urban Spree Galerie and Boddinale for a special gallery residency alongside the film festival (15-25.02.2018).

After 2 weeks of daily indoor work and street interventions in Friedrichshain, we invite the public to discover the outcome of the art residency over the upcoming weekend together with the artist.

The exhibition opens on Saturday, February 24th from 14:00 to 23:00 and will continue on Sunday February 25th from 12:00 to 23:00. Visitors will be able to acquire the original works on canvas and paper produced during the residency in addition to a selection of screen prints and stickers.

SP38 will also screen print “Post Vandal” tote bags live on Saturday!

Post Vandal 2“, explores the notion of vandalism at the age of post-graffiti.

“ERASED”

When street art pays homage to toying.

« Erased » – « Effacé » – « Ausradiert »

Erased: the walls, the city, the memories, 1UP, childhood, history, words, life, empty monuments, hope, innocence, dreams, signs, green trees.

Erase oblivion, rub out memory.

Erase the work before it’s finished, self-efface one’s own work by covering it with its duplicate.

Erase history, both recent and distant. Erase the cruel crystalline nights with repetitive blood red slogans like so many mute, slowly illegible words. Turn a piece of wall lost in a rigid historical street into an evolving and unfinished artwork that derides content by erasing-replacing the same signs, the same forms, the same useless repetitions.

ERASED was written on a large roll of paper found in the trashcan at a kindergarten. The series ran until
the paper ran out. The first one hit the street the day Fidel Castro died …

Pasted up mainly in Berlin, Paris, Seoul, Wilhelmshaven …

“Street art must reinvent or erase itself before it’s too late.” SP38, Berlin 2017 (Transl. Nicholas Grindell)

A relentless urban wanderer and street typographer, SP38 (b.1960) uses different lo-fi techniques (collages, paste-ups, stickers, screenprints, paintings) to imprint his vision of the city and his letters to the walls. Involved at an early stage with the « Figuration Libre » movement in Paris and participant to the first graffiti and street art meeting in 1985 with Vive la Peinture, Speedy Graphito, Futura, Miss Tic, and Blek Le Rat, SP38 has navigated in different squat scenes (including the infamous Berlin’s Tacheles) before moving to Berlin in 1995.

A prime witness of the fast-paced gentrification of the metropolis, his art subtly reveals the fractures of the city through successive campaigns and catchy slogans (« Who kills Berlin? », « Erased », « Escape », « Occupy », « Vive la Bourgeoisie », Vive la Crise »…), where the intimate, personal level often collides with the bigger scale.

The residency will follow its own strenuous path and will increment itself everyday from 12:00 onwards. The public is invited to witness the progression of the residency. A vernissage is scheduled at the end of the residency, on Saturday and Sunday, 24 & 25th of February from 14:00.
