Pharmakon – Urban Spree, Berlin

Doors: 20h, Start: 21h.

„Devour“ marks the fourth full-length record from New York City based artist Margaret Chardiet’s project Pharmakon and the most intense output of her 12 plus years creating industrial noise. Like her previous albums, Devour comes with a strong concept that is exorcised throughout the five demolishing tracks on the album, using imagery and language of self-cannibalism as allegory for the self-destructive nature of humans. Each of the five songs echoes a stage of grief associated with this cyclical chamber of self-destruction and the chaos surrounding us that leads us to devour ourselves in an attempt to balance the agony.

The album was recorded by Ben Greenberg (Uniform) and is the first Pharmakon album recorded live in studio. The A and B sides were each recorded as a continuous take with vocals from start to finish, marking a totally new process for the artist that allows the ferocity and immediacy of her live performance to resonate throughout. Devour also explores new sonic territory, with denser electronics, groovier hooks, and moments of her most unhinged vocal deliveries to date. As one of the premiere vanguards of modern industrial and power electronics, Chardiet continuously pushes the genres and everyone involved in them, and with the release of Devour, she has once again changed the game.

Emerging from the DIY underground of Barcelona, Belgrado initially traded in a stylish mixture of post-punk tropes that could be traced back to the Europe of the early 1980s. Formed in 2010, Barcelona-based outfit Belgrado has existed at the innovative forefront of the global post-punk scene. Now in their ninth year, the quartet continues to play at home and abroad, carrying with them a reputation built on three full length albums and an impressive touring career that has taken them to all corners of the globe.

The tale is perhaps a well-precedented one: a Welshman, an American, and a Swede move to Berlin and start a post-punk band called PLATTENBAU in a studio housed in the massive former DDR Funkhaus. Hans Tobias, Lewis Lloyd und Brandon Walsh describe their very own sonic can of worms as post-ideological surrealism, the ten songs on their self-titled debut album oscillate between noise, pop and surf.

German duo COMA’s upcoming album, „Voyage Voyage” is set for release via City Slang on 22nd November. Across its ten tracks, the pair meld piano, guitar, drums, synths and electronic flourishes to futuristic vocal harmonies that amp up the melancholic pop factor and capture life’s fleeting moments and adventures.

Fusing a pop sensibility with dance music’s communal properties, COMA – AKA Georg Conrad and Marius Bubat – create music rich in melody and often melancholy, their repertoire occupying an emotionally-driven corner of the electronic music spectrum, where dynamic soundscapes collide with honest lyrics.

Pale Honey + Tiny Deaths | Berlin

Pale Honey
+ tiny deaths
30.10. Berlin, Urban Spree
Einlass: 19 Uhr | Beginn: 20 Uhr

Sie wurden auch in der britischen Sunday Times als “Breaking Act” betitelt: “Tuva Lodmark and Nelly Daltrey eschew the synth pop most often associated with their country, favouriting instead a White-Stripesian voice-drums-guitar spareness, with a plinky keyboard sometimes thrown in, that suddenly explodes into violentcolour… brilliant”.

Die Singles “Get These Things Out Of my Head” und das ABBA-Cover “Lay All Your Love On Me” wurden in Schweden und in Dänemark auf High Rotation gespielt und erhielten auch starke Unterstützung von Spotify.

“Devotion” wurde bei der P3 Goldgala in Schweden nominiert und die Band gewann einen Preis für das Album beim Swedish Manifest Galan. Die Band ist nun im Studio und arbeitet an ihrem dritten Album, das Anfang 2020 veröffentlicht wird.

MOLCHAT DOMA

MOLCHAT DOMA
Detriti Records
Minsk, Belarus

Molchat Doma (translated as “Silent Houses”), founded in 2017 in Minsk, Belarus, stands at the intersection of post-punk, new-wave and synth-pop. Dark yet danceable, and with a heavy dose of goth ethos, their music is reminiscent of the masters that predate them, but make no mistake: Molchat Doma creates a sound and meaning that is immediately recognizable as all their own.

The band is comprised of Egor Shkutko, who sings the Russian lyrics in his deep monotone, Roman Komogortsev on guitar, synths, and drum machine, and Pavel Kozlov on bass and synths.

Their second LP, Этажи (pronounced Etazhi, meaning “Floors”) was released in 2018 on Berlin-based Detriti Records. It has sold out four times and is currently on its fifth repressing due to outstanding demand. Этажи has garnered over one million views on Youtube.

Surf Curse – Urban Spree

Tickets: http://puschen.tickets.de / KOKA36 / BIS AUFS MESSER Recordstore

Surf Curse is the indie rock recording project of Los Angeles based songwriters Nick Rattigan and Jacob Rubeck. The pair met as teenagers while growing up outside of Las Vegas, and immediately bonded over underground music, cult films, and a desire to leave their vacuous home town. After moving to Reno for college, Rattigan and Rubeck discovered the city’s local DIY scene and similar blossoming music communities across the country that were becoming connected through the internet. In the fall of 2010 the two formalized their on-going musical collaboration with a new two piece called Surf Curse and played their first show at a Halloween Party. Surf Curse’s initial songs were frantic punk anthems about adolescent heartbreak and alienation, and the band quickly developed an audience of young people who resonated with Rattigan and Rubeck’s anecdotal writing.

Early on Surf Curse frequently performed at landmark all ages venues like The Holland Project, The Smell, and Pehrspace. On one of their first trips to Los Angeles, Rattigan and Rubeck befriended a community of musicians including the likes of Palm Reader, Girlpool, Michael Vidal, and Heller Keller, and recorded their first two releases with Andrew McKelvie at The Smell. Surf Curse developed a cult following almost over night in Los Angeles, but abruptly disappeared for a two year hiatus after Rattigan relocated to New York City.

While living on separate sides of the country, Rattigan and Rubeck devoted most of their attention to their respective solo projects, Current Joys (FKA Tele/Visions) and Casino Hearts. Surf Curse reunited in 2015 and began demoing their second full length, Nothing Yet, which they released with Danger Collective Records in 2017. Over the past five years, seeing Surf Curse live has become a right of passage for disaffected youth in the South-West while Rattigan and Rubeck have spent their formative years between Las Vegas, Reno, and Los Angeles.

Their new record, Heaven Surrounds You, is a coming of age epic, inspired by the many cult films they’ve cherished throughout their young adulthood that are referenced across the album’s track-list. Rattigan and Rubeck worked with veteran indie producer Jarvis Taveniere, carefully crafting a their most lush and vulnerable record to date.
