We found – 10 articles for abstraction

Igor Revelis/Klone: The be(Longing)

Urban Spree Galerie presents „The be(Longing)“, the 3rd solo exhibition of Tel-Aviv based artist Klone with Urban Spree Galerie.

After a decade exploring the medium of paper, „The be(Longing)“ marks the return of the artist to the medium of canvas. Bringing his spray can technique of shadows and gradients to perfection, Klone paints monochrome compositions where the matter of the canvas blends into geometric shapes and abstract landscapes.

„The be(Longing) is an investigation of hybrid identity, a portal into a parallel realm tucked away from the increasingly globalized and visually homologized world. Set against the backdrop of dark gallery walls, restless portraits and landscapes can be peered at, stripped of all contextual clues, the painful human relation between object-subject tugs at the primal root of abstraction. There are no nouns in this landscape, everything is a verb, the gaze is an action.“ Mika Bar-On Nesher

A few signed copies of the latest artist’s monograph – „FEWMOMENTSAGOIWASHERE“,  looking over the last 8 years of exhibitions, mural projects, installation, and animations, will be available at the opening.

Klone (b.1983) is an Ukrianian-born, Tel-Aviv based street artist, a pioneer of graffiti in Israel and a visual artist

Berlin- Praha Barter

After the first exhibition, titled „Praha Berlin Barter“ (March/April 2019) which was hosted by Urban Spree in Berlin, the gallery is this time being hosted by Trafo Gallery in Prague in a new group exhibition called „Berlin Praha Barter„.

Berlin Praha Barter

Preview: 16.05.2019
Exhibition: 17.05. – 23.06.2019

Curated by Pascal Feucher (Urban Spree)

In this second round, we have invited 11 visual artists of the Urban Spree family to exhibit artworks at Trafo Gallery:

The artists are representative of the new Berlin scene that emerged since the Fall of the Wall, starting with the precursor – Jim Avignon – quite known for his painted decors of many of the Berlin squatted clubs of the early 90’s and large historic murals (East Side Gallery) and whose remixed cubist/pop art/Neue Sachlichkeit aesthetics are iconic of the Berlin art scene.

Going along the figurative trail, Marion Jdanoff (half of the duo Palefroi) develops a highly poetic and fairytale-like universe, fueled with middle age tales, strange characters, fabled animals in a rich palette of colors. Fabian Warnsing paints large-sized canvases in a faux-naïf style, creating still life paintings, urban landscapes and everyday scenes.

The graphite drawings of Lars Wunderlich are part of a series from 2017 titled „East German Realities“, whereby the artist applies his process of distortion and glitches to scenes witnessed in the Eastern parts of Germany where nationalism is still a vivid reality.

Sebas Velasco explores the remnants of the Eastern bloc in a series of oil paintings and drawings based on scenes from Yugoslavia and elsewhere, Plattenbau, old cars, graffiti, and neon hotel signs. An urban/architecture thematic which has been magnified over 20 years by EVOL with his stencils on outdoor electric boxes and on cardboard.

Going further, Hendrik Czakainski creates 3D large-scale post-architectural panels which are radical anatomical explorations of the urban body. His works are impressive, immersive, chaotic urban scenes captured from above, on a bird’s eye view perspective.

Besides figurative and architecture-inspired works, a strong line at Urban Spree has always been „post-graffiti abstraction“, i.e. using the codes, techniques, roots, flow and philosophy of graffiti, where the letter becomes an abstraction, a substance.

While Stohead is closer in some instances to the true form of the letter (calligraphy, handstyle, overwriting), he has always experimented beyond it, trying to deconstruct and dissolve the Letter in a post-graffiti approach. Theresa Volpp’s practice is more focused on the very subject of abstract art and bears only a faint distance to graffiti, although some form of automatic writing exists in her work, in a pre-graffiti way, as if abstract art is trying to reconnect with a certain flow but before the invention of graffiti..

Christian August creates multiple layers of grey colors by erasing, scratching, repainting, and finally achieving a wall texture (in the scratchy meaning of Dubuffet and Brassaï in the early 20th century), then completing his work by a stunning dash of ultramarine color, the artist’s persistent signature. Johannes Mundinger has also strong roots in wall painting and creates delicate abstract works in subdued tones, large shapes and blocs, stunning and contemplative abstract landscapes.

Oscillating between abstract and figurative art, Berlin Praha Barter shows a diversity of approaches and styles, seemingly loosely connected but united by an undercurrent practice of wall painting and shared values.

—————————————————————————————————-

Urban Spree Galerie was created in Berlin-Friedrichshain in 2012 as a 400 sqm „artist-run“ space with the objective of discovering and promoting the emerging international wave of post-graffiti painters and artists, with a strong focus on local talents.

The gallery is an essential part of Urban Spree, a 1.700 sqm independent multi-cultural complex comprising a Biergarten, a concert room, a bookshop, 5 artist studios, a screen printing studio, itself set in a 70.000 sqm postindustrial creative compound in the heart of Berlin (R.A.W.).

The gallery benefits from its large urban grassroots ecosystem and offers its invited artists an ideal space for experimentation through ambitious on-site residencies and monthly exhibitions that usually involve painting the outside walls of the compound.

It is armed with these values of generosity and openness, shared with Trafo Gallery, that we together decided to initiate a gallery exchange.

For a decade TELLAVISION has been one of our most exciting sonic inventors, carving out her own inimitable style through her previous three albums, two EPs and countless tracks. New music abstractions echo against a backdrop of old Krautrock mechanical-motorik rhythms, allied to the physically gripping immediacy of techno and noise. Her concerts have consistently been nothing less than spectacular: she has sung and sampled beats from every imaginable and unimaginable variety of live percussion instruments; a loop station virtuoso, an engineer of a technically crafted musical „i“ in which the innate and the alien mirror one another ad infinitum.
Tellavision has never sounded so immediate, so confident, so very much in the moment. This is her finest album to date:
„Drop utopia, / drop dystopia, / it’s all here“.

ALEX ST JOAN was born next to a flooded valley in Australia and raised on Greek myths and disco. Her debut EP „Kick & Rise“ (Zellephan) features 4 distinctive songs that discard the posturing of youth and lay down what it is to be an adult; vulnerable and fully accountable. Whether using fractured synth-saxophones to hammer out a paean to self-determination or building a song around a heartbeat, ALEX ST JOAN is not taking the easy way out. „All of the things that you see as your failings are made up” is a contender for one of the most emotionally sharp lines of the year, yet it’s delivered with such hopeful romanticism one might be forgiven for not noticing the thorns amongst the flowers. These are adult dilemmas; not boy meets girl but woman meets morality, agency, self-actualisation. In merely 4 songs, ALEX ST JOAN builds a framework for us to face our fears, ask the tough questions and then let them go.

Praha-Berlin Barter

In March/April 2019, Urban Spree Galerie invites Prague-based Trafo Gallery for a group show and gallery exchange.

„Praha-Berlin Barter“ will take place from 28.03.2019 to 21.04.2019 and will display the works of 8 prominent Czech artists from the Trafo gallery.

Curated by Trafo Gallery Director Blanka Čermáková, the group show oscillates between contemporary urban arts (Jan Kaláb, Michal Škapa), pop surrealism (Jan Vytiska), contemporary drawing, sculpture, digital art, animation (Jakub Janovský, Michal Cimala, Jakub Nepraš), and geometric abstraction paintings (Robert Šalanda, Ira Svobodová). All artists have been involved in the old Trafacka space in Prague before its destruction and are actively involved into the new Trafo Gallery.

This group exhibition marks the first exchange between 2 independent European galleries sharing the same values and a similar history.

Trafacka was created in 2006 as a gallery and residential space located in an old power station in an industrial district of Prague.
After a couple of years, the place was occupied by more than 100 living and working artists in 36 studios, exhibiting in Trafo Gallery. More than 200 projects took place over the course of 8 years, until the place was finally destroyed in 2014. In 2016, the gallery managed to relocate in a former slaughterhouse (Vietnamese market of Prague, across the river from the historical center). Trafo Gallery was reborn with a 200 sqm gallery space and 4 artist studios. The artist-run gallery presents six exhibitions and six books per year with a focus on the new contemporary Czech art scene and the genres of street art, sculptures, abstraction painting, and digital art.

In the words of Blanka Čermáková, Director of Trafo Gallery: „One exhibition per year is a sort of barter with international projects and galleries which this year leads us to Berlin, city of art, angels and friends. Eight artists based in Prague, united with a long term bond to Trafo Gallery and our history, – Ira Svobodová, Jan Kaláb, Jakub Nepraš, Michal Cimala, Michal Škapa, Jan Vytiska, Robert Šalanda and Jakub Janovský – represent strong personalities and different art expressions. Ira Svobodová paints exact architectural compositions and builds perspective with colors and shadows, Jan Kaláb, a well known artist to Urban Spree with strong street art roots and perfect color and shapes styles, Jakub Nepraš shape sculptures as a platform for his vivid videocollages of microscopic worlds of nature and human babylons, Michal Cimala composes sculptures made often from collected material to existentialist compositions. Graffiti legend Michal Škapa works with urban scenery, apocalyptic and architecture destruction or using expressive colors when writing his crypted rune texts on canvases. Jan Vytiska is a painter of zombie romantic and surrealistic stories often based in forest neighbourhood or in postapocalyptic times. Robert Šalanda works with paper collages of abstract color shapes and transpose it to canvases where playfully upgrades new compositions with gradient colors. Last but not least Jakub Janovský is recognizable with his figurative drawings and often black and white coloring, silicon, enamel or airbrush outlines and ironic reflecting of society problems and characters.

All of these artists, whether picturing abstract motives, displaying the view of their world around or in their visions, are the subatomic particles bonding Trafo Gallery fluidum together. Without them, Trafo Gallery would never exist“.

In June 2019, Urban Spree’s artists will be hosted in Prague by Trafo Gallery.

Bisco Smith: Journey

Urban Spree Galerie is inviting the NYC-based visual artist Bisco Smith (b.1980) for a 3-week art residency at Urban Spree.

During his Berlin residency, Bisco Smith will be creating a whole new body of large scale works that will culminate in a solo show in the galerie from 08.03.2018 to 21.04.2018.

„Journey“ will bring the visitor to the universe of Bisco’s largely freestyle and calligraffiti-inspired black-and-white visual beats.

Bisco’s roots lie in music, graffiti, and street art. He works in a variety of formats, including canvas and large outdoor murals, and his style can be characterized as a blend of graffiti deconstruction, gestural abstraction, and lyric-based stylewriting. Made predominantly with a black and white color palette, his art visually captures the rhythms of music and the energy of the moment through its spontaneous marks and abstracted text.

His work is regularly exhibited in major markets and is collected by both national and international collectors.

UUUU
(uk/swe – new band with members of COIL, DOME, WIRE, TOMAGA)
!!! GERMAN PREMIERE SHOW !!!
UUUU is a new outfit featuring Edvard Graham Lewis, Thighpaulsandra, Matthew Simms and Valentina Magaletti.
Individually these humans have implanted feathers in caps such as Coil, Dome, Wire, Tomaga, etc. Collectively they form UUUU, a powerhouse construction of fierce and free sonic exploration, as liberating as it is frightening, resulting in, the richly rewarding. The artists united present a project of exquisite curiosity and confident chaos where the individual thumbprints mesh into a gloriously muscular frenetic free sonic soup. It’s Going All Over The Floor presents itself as a terse meeting between dance, ambient, abstraction and improvisation. The Latent Black Path Of Summons Served proceeds in a tense energy field where random elements bounce around until locking into a fourth world pattern designed to fall into a dense mass of ecstatic noise. Boots with Wings is classic Lewis – a pop tune from the other side of the mind.
UUUU is a schizophrenic seething/soothing masterpiece of a past/present hybrid equally at home in the club, the home and the mind.

TRANSITIONAL
(uk – members of NOVATRON, RAMLEH, HEAD OF DAVID, JESU, GREYMACHINE , GOD, TERMINAL CHEESCAKE)
!!! FIRST AND ONLY GERMANY SHOW !!!
Transitional is a project from United Kingdom of musician producer Kevin Laska (Novatron) and long time Justin Broadrick and Kevin Martin collaborator Dave Cochrane who also appears on Greymachine.
This is a band which can deliver both sonic tranquility and extremely heavy slabs of dense music and just about everything in between; Heavy electronic machinery, juggernaut bass lines and hypnotic guitars go from passive relaxation to an unstoppable machine within a single surge.
Kevin Laska’s woven creations of bleak electronic / organic mesmerizing mayhem and bliss has found a new level. Now joined by legendary bassist Dave Cochrane who played with the likes of Kevin Martin in God, Ice and The Bug and Justin Broadrick in Jesu and Head of David.
Born in September 2006 Laska’s found himself in another quality up with Cochrane, following his last collaboration with a.o. Russel Smith and Anthony Difranco (Ramleh, ex Skullflower) as Novatron. Transitional; a solid, textured and dynamic sonic journey through a world that is both self deprecating and enlightening, but either way leaves you wanting more.
In 2009 they added Phil Petrocelli on Transitional‘ drums and published their second full length studio album Stomach of the Sun.
From devouring linear drones, lush melancholy to pure unadulterated rage experienced through a back drop of churning rhythms, using Cohesive experimental recording techniques combined with discordant world eating riffs enveloped in a signature approach to atmosphere and interspersing melody.
This performance will mainly consist of material from the bands first two albums “Nothing Real, Nothing Absent” & the unsung “Stomach of the Sun”. A rare opportunity to see a performance from stalwarts of the underground UK Industrial scene.

BILLY BAO
(sp – members of LA SECTA, YOGUR, ATOM-RHUMBA, GUTARIKO BAT)
!!! FIRST GERMANY SHOW !!!
„When I came from Lagos (Nigeria) to San Francisco (Bilbao)
life was tough here or there. I did not mind, I had a purpose in my life: to fight the system that screws everyday of our life. Back in my hometown, I was an unknown songwriter but, as soon as I arrived to the streets of Bilbao, I discovered Punk Rock. It had energy and attitude and was exactly what I needed.
Next thing was to get a band. I found out the most primitive drummer in Bilbao, Alberto Lopez (ex-La Secta, ex-Yogur, ex-Atom-Rhumba), and the noisiest guitarrists around, Mattin & Xabier Erkizia (ex- Gutariko Bat). The band was formed under my name, it could not have been any other way.
These songs go beyond what rock and roll is and what it could be, in fact they are the degenereation of Rock&Roll against the regeneration of Bilbao.“ – Billy Bao, Bilbao Dec 2004
http://www.mattin.org/2_Billy_Bao.html

CARLTON MELTON
(usa – members of ZEN GUERILLA)
Mendocino County in Northern California is known for its spectacular coastline views, immense redwood trees in ancient forests and abundant nature that remains largely undisturbed by man. It is perhaps the most logical home base for a band like Carlton Melton, who compose and record their music in a geodesic dome (a.k.a. The Dome). It is the perfect setting for a band creating meditative soundtracks freed from the constraints of traditional song composition.
While Carlton Melton’s sound is heavily inspired by psychedelic music, it is equal parts, blues, rock, improvisation and drone. Whether the band is hanging on a well-defined riff reminiscent of Led Zeppelin or Joe Walsh or largely abandoning conventional music structure à la Spacemen 3 and Bardo Pond, Carlton Melton uses layers, textures and repetition to create music that makes full use of the spaces in between notes and chord changes … sonic explorations if you will.
The music that Carlton Melton makes is bold and does not hesitate to “go there” just to see what the heck might be still left out there in the world of unexplored improvisational and psychedelic music. And there is a lot of ground left to explore and cover. Whether it’s in The Dome or in the live setting, Carlton Melton give themselves full permission to realize and create spontaneous sounds and create genuine musical gestures that resonate beautifully with audiences throughout the world. How many bands can claim that?
http://www.carltonmeltonmusic.com/

NERVØS!
(nor)
!!! FIRST AND ONLY GERMANY SHOW !!!
NERVØS! founded in Stjørdal, North Trøndelag, Norway ca 2000/2001 – performing «lydrock» as they call it (or «lautrock» if you wanna be all international about it).
Aiming for a trance state by repetition, blind/stupid rage, and a relation to sound as an overwhelming physical presence.
Each track they relentlessly beat down maximum 1-2 insanely heavy riffs, with filthy as hell distortion, pissed beyond belief vocals and caveman beats from the land before time. Matched with their huge wall of sound, harsh background noise and shifting guitars and drums they will make you crawl on all fours until you forget your mother tongue.
https://nerv0s.bandcamp.com/

JAMES WELBURN
(nor)
James Welburn’s debut album ‚Hold‘, published by Miasmah, was described as „Like watching a massive twisting fire slowly fading into the open skies, accompanied by a drum section so repetitive yet mind bending that you’re unsure if it’s ever going to stop“
Hailing from the UK, but located in both Berlin (DE) and Lillehammer (NO), James has been on a path to catch the perfect drone through the last years, playing an abundance of underground drone and noise sets in Berlin and Norway.
His biography already boasts notable collaborations, such as the one with the legendary drummer Tony Buck of The Necks or those with Tomas Järmyr (of Zu & Motorpsycho), Aidan Baker (of Nadja), Svarte Greiner (aka Erik K Skodvin), Andrea Belfi and the pioneering 60’s New York drone composer Phill Niblock.
Today Welburn performs a live set on the boundary between noise rock and electronica, modifying dirty electric bass sounds with abstract software effects into dark engulfing soundscapes and searing bass drones that breathe with a mysterious forceful energy. A relentless rhythm section drives the music forward, forming epic compositions of sound and noise.
„… Full of sounds and structures to get lost in, to bathe in the layers and wade through the textures that Welburn constructs with consummate skill…marks him out as a solo artist and collaborationist to watch“ – The Quietus

HUMAN INFERNO
(nor – members of NO BALLS, ANAL BABES, ASTROBURGER, ex-TURBONEGRO)
!!! FIRST GERMANY SHOW !!!
Human Inferno is an electronic project from Oslo, Norway. They`ve been around, in different mutations, since 2003.
Before then, everyone in the band played noisepunk. This past is also present today.
There have been several vinyl releases since 2003. The latest being „Medication“ on Entr`acte from Antwerpen:
http://entracte.co.uk/projects/human-inferno-e185
The future looks bleak, there is absolutely no info available as to what the gig at NT might sound like.
https://soundcloud.com/entracte/e185

FANGE
(fra – members of HUATA, BRAIN PYRAMID)
!!! FIRST BERLIN SHOW !!!
Formed in late 2013 by Baptiste from Brain Pyramid and Benjamin from Huata, FANGE (meaning “mire” in french) is a simple project. Making harsh riffs and hard beats, playing them loud, with a huge amount of distorted sounds and feedbacks.
All you’ll find here is a huge amount of fuzz and distortion, out of hand feedbacks, low tuning and big amps, heavy beats and fat kicks, distorded vocals, wall of noises. Sinking into a dirty and filthy noise-sludge to exorcize the human grime and primal idioms conveyed by all the summer and warm stuff, we are in deep mud.
https://fange.bandcamp.com/

MNHM
(nl)
!!! FIRST BERLIN SHOW !!!
MNHM give birth to ‘melodic noise’ from a higher and heavier dimension combining elements from post/math-rock and doom. After releasing their well-received debut album Super-Empowered and touring all over Europe, the band teamed up with producer Rocky O’Reilly (And So I Watch You From Afar) to work on their second album ‚Of Empires Past‘ which was released on May 5 2017 on Consouling Sounds
https://mnhm.bandcamp.com/

PILORI
(fra)
!!! FIRST BERLIN SHOW !!!
Formed in Normandy (France) by active members of the local scene, Pilori is crust hardcore band with black metal, powerviolence and grindcore influences. After sharing the stage with bands like Nostromo, Oathbreaker, Regarde Les Hommes Tomber, Cowards, Comity or Harm Done, and releasing their first 4 tracks tape, Pilori just released a split vinyl with an american post-black metal band, Dakhma. Their sound is noisy, dark, oppressive, incisive and filthy, both fast and massive.
https://pilori.bandcamp.com/

ORTURE
(ger)
!!! TAPE RELEASE SHOW !!!
ORTURE is a new band, that crawled up to earth’s crust from different realms of the underground to deliver satanic dadaism. A raw black metal assault with shredding guitars, blasting drums, unholy roar, massive contrabass drones and gut grinding harsh noise layers. Convulsions of the black emperor’s hammer, cold sardonic industrial tremor and the nuclear dragon’s breath will unleash the beast in each and everyone of you.
They will present their first release at Noise Testament!

WRNGDNG
(ger)
VVRNGDNG stands for wrong doing, based in the wrong part of Berlin.
Snitching musick into pieces, with sharp as a shark wrongness.
Wrong party in your scum yard with trash bags full of surprises
like peaky loudness and raspy screaming, drumbeats like origami
and bass bubbles for an unknown future.
http://wrngdng.tumblr.com/

TATSUMI RYUSUI
(jap)
is a Berlin based musician born in Ehime, Japan. He taught himself to play guitar at the age of 10, and since this point has expanded into the world of circuit bending, the collection of field recordings and building his own instruments. He is active within the experimental music scene in Berlin, where he has lived and worked since 2009.
He predominantly performs with the electric guitar, which he processes along with several self built instruments through a system of pedals and effects to generate delicate, yet powerful and astonishing textures that connect drone with the cathartic side of noise. His sound embodies the sonic transition of everyday sounds into ethereal soundscapes and ambient textural improvisation.
https://tatsumiryusui.bandcamp.com/

VORDEMFALL
(ger)
There are limbs and a tongue and it’s all pretty emotionnally unstable. Vordemfall is a constant dry/wet game playing around with elements of progressive, noise and krautrock, into a haunted and moody blend. Their tendencies are based on a deeply rooted paradox. Her riffs and vocals are in turns abrasive and lustful – His hits, tribal or hyperactive.
https://vordemfall.bandcamp.com/
