Words and Actions is an electronic post punk project from Italy, now Berlin based, formed in 2010.
French coldwave gloominess meets the energy and minimalism of the German old school EBM and the charm of the Yugoslavian darkwave.
Borghesia, Malaria!, DAF, Liaisons Dangereuses but also the Italian CCCP are the main inspirations.
Low-fi sounds, xerox graphics cassette tapes and VHS videos hold up the raw image of this project whose loyalty to 80s DIY underground post punk is undeniable.

Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso Underground Freak Out (and subsequent offshoots) is a Japanese psychedelic space rock band, the core of which formed in 1995. The band is led by guitarist Kawabata Makoto and early in their career featured many musicians, but by 2004 the line-up had coalesced with only a few core members and frequent guest musicians.
The band has released albums frequently on a number of international record labels as well as the Acid Mothers Temple family record label, which was established in 1998 to document the activities of the whole collective.
“In a non-stop stream of thrilling noise, they segue from supercharged stomp-rock, through doomy choral chanting and frazzled go-go, to a thundering melee of atonal freakouts. Then on to a pulsating, echo-drenched disco-rock groove, which morphs into a motorik rhythm too rapid even for the autobahn, works itself into a squalling frenzy, breaks cover as a kind of galloping, syncopated, Underworld-with-rabies affair, and flows into a long, chiming trance number climaxing in a collective instrumental howl.” – David Bennun

Carrying on a long tradition of sun-beaten Phoenix punk, Sunn Trio evokes the sweltering and hallucinatory Arizona desert. Echoes of Sonny Sharrock, John McLaughlin, and Sir Richard Bishop can be heard in Joel Robinson’s fiery blurs of guitar. Imagine the Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 in full force, echoing from behind a curtain of bitter haze. Founded by Robinson in 2010, the ever-changing band has been constantly recording and releasing material, with a recent LP, Fayrus, on Germany’s Unrock Records.

Stereocilia is Bristol based guitarist and composer, John Scott. John uses his guitar, analog synths and live looping techniques to create dense, rich layers of sound.
Over the past 10 years John has performed all over the UK and Europe with various projects. in the past he has shared a stage with acts including: Gnod, Daniel Lanois, Ex-Easter Island Head, White Hills, Acid Mothers Temple, Ben Frost, Josef Van Wissem, Yuri Landman, Mick Turner (The Dirty Three), Machinefabriek, ThisQuietArmy, Noveller, and performed in three of Rhys Chatham’s guitar Orchestras. He has also presented work for live radio broadcasts, and regularly composes for Short Film.
Spring of 2019 saw the release of Stereocilia’s 4th album, and second for Brighton label, Drone Rock Records.

Anticipation gracefully helps to build up every salvo launched by the band, assaulting the eardrum with incredible precision. Their compositions increasingly more refined, juxtaposing sparse minimalism with thunderous feedback, BIG|BRAVE strives to continue pushing the limits of what heavy experimental rock can sound like while maintaining a strong interest in reaching bliss.
Somewhere between the margins of a minimal rock band, experimental outfit and drone aficionados, BIG|BRAVE strives to never belong to anyone given classification. Utilising standard „band“ tools such vocals, electric guitars, drums, feedback and amplifiers, B|B explores the possibilities of what a band can sound like while constantly resisting and deconstructing the archetypal characterisations of song structure and form.
Building spectacular, inverted rock constructions that sound many magnitudes bigger than one would suspect a trio was capable of, Montreal’s BIG|BRAVE has been in existence since 2012, with members spread across two guitars and drums respectively. Unhurried and untouchable, BIG|BRAVEpossess that same valued independent spirit which pervades their local contemporaries, and is at the root of their intense and exploratory musical offerings. Their sound lulls and lurches between passages of rhythmic noise pollution and vocal led awe, using considered juxtapositions of force and restraint to warp the senses. Remarkably quiet at times, their ambiance is not one of minimalism, but of dawning, foreboding power with the need to be vented, and when the hot flushes of blighted percussion and monochromatic guitar scrapes arrive, they arrive with triumphant force.

MY DISCO is an Australian music group that was formed between long term 2018 collaborators, Rohan Rebeiro, Benjamin Andrews, and Liam Andrews in 2003.
In 2003, MY DISCO performed their first shows in unconventional all-ages venues in Melbourne.
Late 2003 saw the release of their debut 7″ and marked their first Australian tour. The band soon became renowned for their arduous tour ethic, demonstrated in extensive tours to often far to reach destinations that included remote areas of Australia, Southeast Asia and Mexico.
The release of their debut album ‚Cancer‘ in late 2006 marked a new level of emphasis on minimalism. More international and national tours were undertaken, including additional tours to the United States, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
Their second album ‚Paradise‘ was recorded in Chicago, Illinois in 2007 with Steve Albini at his studio Electrical Audio. The album is noted as the band’s most refined and minimalist release, capturing their stentorian live sound, with several songs consisting of one note, repetitive single-sentence vocals and long- sustained guitar chords. Drum patterns, although minimal, still offer dance-like, disjointed beats.
2010 saw the release of a new single called „Young“, a limited edition 12″ released through Mistletone Records and re-issue through Blast First Petite, as a lead up to their third and forthcoming album.
2010 Saw the release of the band’s third and most diverse album, ‚Little Joy.‘ Their first signing to NYC acclaimed label, Temporary Residence Limited.
2012 MY DISCO released another limited 12″, this time World Wide through Temporary Residence Ltd, entitled „Wrapped Coast.“ The record features two extensive racks, with remixes by London’s Factory Floor, and Birmingham based noise-maker Justin Broadrick.
On International Record Store Day in 2013, the band put out a single on one of the World’s most acclaimed independent labels, Sub Pop records. It featured as the label’s 1000th release.
2014/15 saw the band put the finishing touches on their fourth studio album, entitled „Severe“ and once again working with Producer and friend Cornel Wilzcek at Electric Dreams Studios in South Melbourne.

The debut from NONN was a stark collection of minimalistic post-punk that marked him as one of the most exciting outputs in the dark Scandinavian scene. After touring the record across Europe and recruiting a full band, the project is back with its second album, XVII, due for release December 7th on Fuzz Club.
Now more of a collaborative effort, with Hannes Nyling and Christian’s brother Alexander joining the fold, the new record deals in a fuller more refined sound and packs a far heftier punch. Where the self-titled debut was a restrained, minimalist affair, XVII opts for slabs of industrial electronics and hard-hitting percussion. The gloomy 80s sensibilities are still there – see the occasional Cure-esque guitars and morose gothic vocals – but on XVII, NONN turn their eyes more towards the electronic affliction of EBM and synth-punk than the polished, more-digestible post-punk that came reverberating out of the decade.
This shift in the band’s sound all boils down to having to reinvent the songs when taking them on the road following the release of their debut, which saw them tour the UK and mainland Europe and play at a number of festivals; from Liverpool Psych Fest and Fuzz Club Eindhoven to, more recently, Endless Daze in South Africa. “Since the last record we’ve been doing a lot of shows which gave us a lot of inspiration. We reworked the old songs to sound a bit fuller and more fun to play live. Having to reinvent all the sounds and instruments from the first album really inspired the direction on XVII,” Christian remarks.
It’s clear that taking the project on the road with a full-band has had a notable effect. Tracks like ‘Clear’, ‘Home’ and ‘Beyond’ see NONN shift their bleak, darkwave-inflected post-punk into something far richer. It’s still got that minimalistic feel and the ear-worm melodies are still there, but it’s more sinister and fleshed out. Though, what truly sets this album apart from the debut is where the band have delved deeper into their electronic side. The industrial stomp of album-opener ‘Pray’ declares the LP’s merciless intent without a guitar in sight; it’s a destructive cut of throbbing synths and desolate drum machine, underpinned by Christian’s monotonous vocals. Partner that with the sparse, haunting electronics of ‘Believe’ and the mechanical synth-punk of ‘Hide’ and it’s clear that NONN are at their best when truly embracing their deeply-cherished Moog Sub Phatty, using it to exorcise the many demons lurking beneath the noise.

Praha-Berlin Barter

In March/April 2019, Urban Spree Galerie invites Prague-based Trafo Gallery for a group show and gallery exchange.

„Praha-Berlin Barter“ will take place from 28.03.2019 to 21.04.2019 and will display the works of 8 prominent Czech artists from the Trafo gallery.

Curated by Trafo Gallery Director Blanka Čermáková, the group show oscillates between contemporary urban arts (Jan Kaláb, Michal Škapa), pop surrealism (Jan Vytiska), contemporary drawing, sculpture, digital art, animation (Jakub Janovský, Michal Cimala, Jakub Nepraš), and geometric abstraction paintings (Robert Šalanda, Ira Svobodová). All artists have been involved in the old Trafacka space in Prague before its destruction and are actively involved into the new Trafo Gallery.

This group exhibition marks the first exchange between 2 independent European galleries sharing the same values and a similar history.

Trafacka was created in 2006 as a gallery and residential space located in an old power station in an industrial district of Prague.
After a couple of years, the place was occupied by more than 100 living and working artists in 36 studios, exhibiting in Trafo Gallery. More than 200 projects took place over the course of 8 years, until the place was finally destroyed in 2014. In 2016, the gallery managed to relocate in a former slaughterhouse (Vietnamese market of Prague, across the river from the historical center). Trafo Gallery was reborn with a 200 sqm gallery space and 4 artist studios. The artist-run gallery presents six exhibitions and six books per year with a focus on the new contemporary Czech art scene and the genres of street art, sculptures, abstraction painting, and digital art.

In the words of Blanka Čermáková, Director of Trafo Gallery: „One exhibition per year is a sort of barter with international projects and galleries which this year leads us to Berlin, city of art, angels and friends. Eight artists based in Prague, united with a long term bond to Trafo Gallery and our history, – Ira Svobodová, Jan Kaláb, Jakub Nepraš, Michal Cimala, Michal Škapa, Jan Vytiska, Robert Šalanda and Jakub Janovský – represent strong personalities and different art expressions. Ira Svobodová paints exact architectural compositions and builds perspective with colors and shadows, Jan Kaláb, a well known artist to Urban Spree with strong street art roots and perfect color and shapes styles, Jakub Nepraš shape sculptures as a platform for his vivid videocollages of microscopic worlds of nature and human babylons, Michal Cimala composes sculptures made often from collected material to existentialist compositions. Graffiti legend Michal Škapa works with urban scenery, apocalyptic and architecture destruction or using expressive colors when writing his crypted rune texts on canvases. Jan Vytiska is a painter of zombie romantic and surrealistic stories often based in forest neighbourhood or in postapocalyptic times. Robert Šalanda works with paper collages of abstract color shapes and transpose it to canvases where playfully upgrades new compositions with gradient colors. Last but not least Jakub Janovský is recognizable with his figurative drawings and often black and white coloring, silicon, enamel or airbrush outlines and ironic reflecting of society problems and characters.

All of these artists, whether picturing abstract motives, displaying the view of their world around or in their visions, are the subatomic particles bonding Trafo Gallery fluidum together. Without them, Trafo Gallery would never exist“.

In June 2019, Urban Spree’s artists will be hosted in Prague by Trafo Gallery.

One Week with 1UP” is an exceptional exhibition of photographs and artworks by Martha Cooper, 1UP Crew, and Ninja K. to coincide with the publication of the book „One Week With 1UP“.

The show is only the second exhibition ever made by the legendary Berlin-based vandal graffiti crew 1UP after their first show at Urban Spree in 2014 – „I Am 1UP“.

This time, the Kreuzberg crew embarks NYC-based legendary documentary photographer Martha Cooper and Berlin-based photographer Ninja K. in a series of underground actions, through tunnels, rooftops, featuring high pressure fire extinguisher tags, roll-downs, roll-ups, street bombings, whole cars and backjumps…

One Week with 1UP” is a first-hand and behind-the-scenes account of the most important European crew of the 21st century.

Wake in Fright, the second full-length by the New York City duo Uniform, is a harrowing exploration of self-medication, painted in the colors of war. Following the Ghosthouse 12″, whose A-side Pitchfork called “their most relentless track yet,” vocalist Michael Berdan and guitarist/producer Ben Greenberg return with a new batch of even more punishing songs that incorporate elements of industrial music, thrash metal, harsh noise, and power electronics.
“This record is primarily about psychic transition,” Berdan explained. “The distress that these songs attempt to illustrate comes from a place of stagnation and monotony. This is what happens when old ways of thinking become exhausted and old ways of coping prove ineffective. Something must change or it will break.”
The characters Berdan brings to life in his lyrics quit using but have ruinous relapses (“Habit”) or struggle as their resolve crumbles (“Bootlicker”); they use alcohol to ease their insomnia but and are helpless when they get sober and stop sleeping again (“Night of Fear”); they’re existential misanthropes trapped in dead-end lives (“The Lost”). While the titles have been largely culled from the world of horror, thematically these songs have more in common with the works of Hubert Selby, Jr than Lucio Fulci. These are stories about people at the end of their proverbial ropes. Their old medicines are no longer effective and their old ways of living cause them nothing but confusion and despair. They are paralyzed by fear, regret, and self-doubt. This is either the darkness before the dawn or eternal night.
Greenberg sets these stories to menacing guitar and samples of literal sounds of war — the kick drums are bombs going off, the snares are gunshots. He drew the record’s immense sample library from action movies, Foley sound packs, field recordings, and more, and the result is devastating. The guitar is also as crucial as ever, and now as indebted Slayer as it is to Big Black. Greenberg conjures up massive riffs and shredding solos, pushing the band deeper into the metal world whose borderlands they’ve long stalked. Where the inner monologues of Berdan’s characters and Greenberg’s martial sonic palette collide, Wake in Fright finds its wrecking-ball power.
