Priests sind das 2011 gegründete Quartett um Katie Alice Greer (Vocals), Daniele Daniele (Schlagzeug), G.L. Jaguar (Gitarre) und Taylor Mulitz (Bass).

Und wir erinnern uns: in der Peripherie Washington, DC’s wurde nicht nur Hardcore erfunden, nein, er wurde dort auch stets erweitert. Angefangen mit den Bad Brains, über Fugazi und deren Dischord Imprint, Ian Svenonius’ The Nation of Ulysses, später Q and not U und den fantastischen Black Eyes, bis eventuell sogar hin zu Chain and the Gang. Allesamt Bands, deren politische Grundhaltung sich durch eine gewisse musik-ästhetische Sperrigkeit fortformulierte – zwar nicht unbedingt in Form eines einheitlichen Sounds – jedoch unisono und unmißverständlich als klares Statement gegen eine white-male-dominated Rock’n’Roll-Konditionierung.

Und nun, zwei Jahre nach der Veröffentlichung ihrer erstmals überregional wahrgenommenen EP Bodies and Control and Money and Power (auf ihrem eigenen Sister Polygon-Label), legen Priests unter produktionstechnischer Mithilfe von Hugh McElroy (von besagten Black Eyes) und Kevin Erickson ein Album nach, dass so swirly, auf den Punkt und post-Kathleen Hanna ist, dass jedes letzte Julie Ruin-Album freiwillig aus dem Regal fällt.

Zwischen hymnischen NoWave-Eskapaden, funky Post-Punk-Stompern und melancholisch flirrenden Noise-Ausbrüchen treiben Greer’s angerörte Vocals wie Schlingpflanzen durch das Rhythmus-Gerüst. Eklektizismus und Groovyness bilden die Hauptkoordinaten im Sound der Priests. Und daraus ergeben sich ganz zwangsläufig Traditionslinien: New Wave-Koryphäen wie Kleenex, Bush Tetras, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks kommen in den Sinn; Nineties-Phänomene wie Dog Faced Hermans oder aber auch Lush lassen sich verorten; in ätherischen Essenzen kann man sogar The Creatures und Siouxsie and the Banshees nachspüren.

Urban Spree invites you to the Berlin launch party of The Graffiti Trucks of Paris by Marc Vallée.

London based documentary photographer Marc Vallée is back at Urban Spree on Friday 21 July 2017 to launch the second edition The Graffiti Trucks of Paris with a photographic installation of images from the photozine.

“The pictures here highlight how artists have brought the creative activism of subversive graffiti into (or onto) these commercialised infrastructures of urban mobility. As trucks and vans move consumable goods of the elite urban economy around the city, they carry with them the viruses of activism. Like the New York subway trains in the 1970s, the graffiti trucks of Paris are a mobile gallery of graffiti and its affront to the sterile spaces of urban commodity movement.” – Dr. Oli Mould.

With a foreword by human geographer Dr. Oli Mould The Graffiti Trucks of Paris was published in March 2017 and featured in Huck Magazine, HERO Magazine and Tate Britain acquired a copy for its library collection.

Jim Avignon: Here Comes the Bad News

Jim Avignon returns to Urban Spree Galerie for his second solo show « Here Comes the Bad News », 2 years after « Permanent Jetlag ».

In his only exhibition in Berlin for the year 2019, Jim Avignon describes the mood in the world and in Berlin in particular with his usual wit.

Gentrification, Global Warming, Surveillance Capitalism, Alt Right… here comes indeed the bad news. His paintings are a mash-up of cartoony figuration, expressionistic composition, – a maximum of expression with a minimum of lines.

 

Jim Avignon is a painter, illustrator and conceptual artist. Always ready to confront the establishment he is torn between pop art, street art, Picasso on acid or simply being the fastest painter in the world. His signature style consists of vivid colours, a biting humor, unpretentious materials and a mind numbing output. His art works like pop music in DIY mode.

According to the legend, the artist became stranded in the Provence city of Avignon at some point in the ’80s when his car unexpectedly broke down. He resorted to painting Dali images onto pavements, gradually raising money to repair his car. The name stayed.

In the early 90s, he became an ubiquitous painter of the techno movement, designing makeshift clubs and Love Parade trucks.

By creating a colorful flood of affordable, rapidly-produced works, Jim disrupts the well-oiled art market and pervades it with black humor and self-irony. Avignon’s images caricature the modus operandi of the art market and are also aimed at people who are bored or deterred by the gold-framed aura of so-called high art. « Good Artists Go To The Museum, Bad Artists Go Everywhere ».

Of course, we’ll dance the legendary Små Grodorna 🐸 around the maypole 🌴, sweat in a Finnish sauna 🔥 and have fun games 🏄 prepared and bands & DJs will perform on stage 🎸💃🏻. A bunch of local food trucks will offer a range of yummy salty 🍜🍤🍲 and sweet food 🍒🍰🍬🍧🍦 , drinks 🍹🍻☕️and ice cream 🍦.

DAMO SUZUKI
Former lead singer of the legendary and seminal german krautrock band Can, Damo, resident in Köln (De) since the 70s, has been performing since mid ´97 with his project DAMO SUZUKI´S NETWORK around the world with more than 7,000 different musicians in 43 countries. He will bring his project this year at the 3rd edition, and first summer one, of the Interkosmos festival. A festival focused on several forms of music: experimentation, electronic, krautrock, drone, post punk, impro.
Damo will perform with TAU from Berlin.

CUMMI FLU is the latest incarnation of the ever-changing multimedia illusionist Oliver Doerell. Born in Brussels, he was the driving force behind the electronica projects Dictaphone and SWOD, and a sound box in Raz Ohara’s Odd Orchestra.

There was once a pop music genre that was not actually a genre. It emerged in the late nineties and early 2000s. It was called ‘electronica’. This genre was no more a genre than ‘indie’ or even ‘pop’. Electronica was a term simply used to define club music, ambient or noise. It referred to a compartmentalized and, for the most part, friendly listening music that was not good to dance to. As a result, a wide range of musical styles came to be classified under this non-genre just because there was no other suitable classification at the time. And now Oliver Doerell is producing music that sounds like a late electronica manifesto.

BLUE CRIME’s stars have a gloomy shine, inspired by myths and dreams and parallel universes. Earth felt too low; space is the place. They started out as a glowworm in a dark atom shelter, and emerged as eerie moonpop, growing grittier in time. Call it moonpsych, noisefolk, call it earthquakes with guitars and vocal eclipses. Or just feel it, and call it nothing at all. Be it love or hate, dark or light… Blue Crime shows no
mercy for the sober and cold-hearted.
