Kælan Mikla + Some Ember live

[aufnahme + wiedergabe] presents:

Kælan Mikla live
[ISL, Artoffact Records / Fabrika Rec]
www.kaelanmikla.bandcamp.com

Icelandic post-punk meets death-synth trio Kælan Mikla returns for the group’s third album, Nótt Eftir Nótt.

Topping a year that catapulted the band onto stages shared with the likes of The Cure and Placebo, Nótt Eftir Nótt is Kælan Mikla at their most confident, and their most deadly. It’s been five years since Margrét Rósa Dóru-Harrysdóttir, Laufey Soffia, and Sólveig Matthildur Kristjánsdóttir formed the band in Reykjavik, but after several tours and high-profiles stages, as well as two critically-acclaimed albums, Kælan Mikla has brought their A-game in a big way.

Starting off quietly with a creepy, gothed-out ethereal intro, Nótt Eftir Nótt erupts with post-punk brilliance and synthlines that harken back to the bad old days of the Batcave, big hair, and Egyptian-inspired eye-liner. Tracks like the melancholy “Hvernig kemst ég upp?” are wonderfully delightful, while the band goes for the big goth dance number on “Skuggadans,” succeeding with glorious ease. Near the end of Nótt Eftir Nótt, when you’ve already ingested a healthy dose of Diamanda Galas meets The Birthday Party, the title track, produced by popular Icelandic electronic wizard Bang Gang, is basically perfect.

Hot on the heels of shows at Roadburn, Meltdown, and The Cure’s 40th Anniversary, as well as a Fall tour supporting King Dude, Kælan Mikla are set to take their place as one of darkest aural poets on the world stage.

Some Ember live
[US, Third Coming Records]

SUBMERGING THE SUN, the second LP by Some Ember, is a journal of climatological grief, intimate vulnerability, and transcendental sadness. Self-produced by songwriter Dylan Travis, the record’s sparse arrangements are weighted by bleak ambience and dramatic vocal turns. Icy synthesizers pierce veils of fog-like drones, delivering sorrow and catharsis. Tides of dissonance ebb to reveal glittering mirages of hope, which are just as soon swept away.

Long a fixture of the Oakland, CA musical underground, Some Ember has seen many forms – a solo dream pop bedroom project, a four-piece goth rock outfit, then a hardware-based synth duo, and now a solo performance project once more. Following cassettes on Crash Symbols, Night-People and Ascetic House, the band released their first LP on Dream in 2014. In 2015, Travis and longtime collaborator Nina Chase made the move to Berlin. After a tumultuous two years (which saw a further cassette released on Dream, “DEBTS OF LOVE”), the band will release SUBMERGING THE SUN, as well as a companion cassette EP, SUBMERGED, on Third Coming Records in November 2018.

LUNACY (Darkwave/Noise/Philadelphia)
https://lunacy.bandcamp.com/

“This is a sonic walk-through of landscapes that no longer exist. This is the drip of electronic water on memories of something deep in rooms without a view. Echoes of human activity resonating in the factory chapel, the walls and sentiments covered with moss.” -Roy Montgomery

“As haunting as their songs are, they are beautiful. With each listen this project takes you to a deep, dark, murky place where sound has the power to change your reality!” – CVLT Nation

“A slow burner, distorted and obscure, visionary and obsessive, Lunacy’s distinctive sonic craftsmanship will crawl under your skin and linger and “sediment” in your mind indefinitely.” – White Light//White Heat

Offermose (Dungeon Synth/Copenhagen)
https://offermose.bandcamp.com/

“I saw the seasons change like stages of putrefaction in my decaying flesh Spring came darkest of all sprouting death-like flowers through puss-filled pores Silent screams choked by earth echoed in my skull from a thousand dead Bodies buried deep below forever suffocating in their final breath”

Force Field 2-Night Event w Gigsta & Aquarian

This time for the course of a full weekend, Force Field is insanely excited to present Gigsta and Aquarian, both masters of their own distinct sounds.

Host of Cashmere Radio’s Frictions show Gigsta + recent Bedouin Records’ signee Aquarian, will be presenting two very different interpretations of bass-heavy sounds, from skeletal riddims to juicy bangers and beyond.
Our one-off weekend will also be presenting several debuting projects: Two first-ever duo sets by Aquarian b2b RO Zar + a first Force Field resident b2b between RO Zar and Misantrop (latter of who will also be playing a solo set). Finally we’re excited to present Wesley, geriatric-digger yet tenderfoot-DJ, Force Field confidant Jonathan Clark.

GIGSTA (03.08)
A regular host on Cashmere Radio with her show Fictions, Gigsta has been working across many fields of musical theory and practice over the last decade. She is currently writing a PhD on Techno Criticism and spends all of her time away from the library, dancing, playing and digging for sounds. Her sets bring together a variety of genres and she explores different tempos, rhythms, colors and sounds with a specific fascination for lower frequencies.

AQUARIAN (04.08)
Aquarian makes raw, arresting and immediate music aimed squarely at the dance floor. His sound draws from both sides of the Atlantic, combining Drexcyian electro, old school jungle and UK grime with vertical singularity. The Canadian born, Brooklyn/Berlin based artist broke out with a trio of records for UNO NYC, with his 2014 self titled EP cementing him as an artist to watch while landing him a mix on Resident Advisor’s coveted podcast series. Since then he has released records through his own culinary-rave imprint, Hanger Management (described by RA as “Aquarian at his best: searing club melodrama, built from whip-crack breaks, ground-splitting bass and acrid techno adornments), also releasing a lauded experimental cassette for Quiet Time Tapes, a standout track on Allergy Season x Discwoman’s Physically Sick compilation and mixing for Rob Booth’s Seminal Electronic Explorations series.
2018 saw his debut collaborative EP with Deapmash (Leisure System) as AQXDM on UAE’s Bedouin Records with early support from the likes of Ben UFO, Objekt, Avalon Emerson, Dax J, and Emmanuel and championed by the likes of Pitchfork, Mixmag and Resident Advisor. The former wrote: “…scrupulously de-signed, hi-def…crisp and propulsive, “Aegis” is more than a slice of dark and unforgiving techno; it’s some sorely needed dancefloor euphoria.”

FORCE FIELD
Force Field is an event venture gathering the sonic perspectives of selectors RO Zar and Misantrop.
Anything goes—it’s a vibrant melting pot of divergent sounds and disparate tempos, orbiting around bass diasporas, off-kilter riddims, the hardcore continuum, a spectrum of euphoria, modern angularity, oddball gems, and further filth. Cheeky fun for the dancers who like to be kept on their toes.

Particle Kid feat. Willie Nelson‘s son Micah Nelson + HEKLA

Particle Kid, feat. Micah Nelson (son of Willie Nelson, member of Neil Young‘s band) + HEKLA – Berlin doom pop (swelling synth sounds, dramatic rythms and wavy guitar washes) LIVE!

Particle Kid (experimental folk rock | US)

Particle Kid is the experimental musical identity of Los Angeles-based musician and visual artist J. Micah Nelson. As Particle Kid, Micah Nelson has created a multi-dimensional musical universe all his own, crafted with immense ambition, inventive production techniques, and strikingly emotive song craft. Nelson achieves the near impossible by sounding both familiar and oddly modern, with the spirits of future folk, low rider funk, riff rock, power pop, lysergic Americana, flower punk, and progressive jazz fusion all somehow woven together with deep-rooted melodies, unique improvisational elements, and remarkably intricate arrangements.

HEKLA (doom pop | Berlin)

Fronted by two Swedish cousins, HEKLA is a quartet stemming from Berlin’s musical melting pot. Inspired by everything from Scandinavian folk music to 80s synthwave adventures, they bring you along for a ride into the abandoned beach towns and forgotten volcanoes of their minds.
In both music and lyrics, grandiose dreams face their constant companion, destruction. Never shying away from the drama, HEKLA sing about the obsession and madness in us all.
HEKLA released their self-titled debut album in 2017. Their new EP, Boulevards, is out in June 2018.
