Redscale – South Grove – Heavy Heavy | Urban Spree

Church of Moon – Swamp Conspiracy – DUSTOWN presents
« A Danger Can Of Thounderous Sludgy Headbangs »
FFO: Stoner, Blues, Sludge, Doom, Punk, Psych & Heavy RAWK!

« REDSCALE deliver large in tone and tonnage, bearing enough resonant mass to sate beast king and listener alike. Colosseum-sized chordage, hippodrome-heavin’ hooks and ziggurat-rockin’ rhythms are hammered and tempered in the grand sonic forge, until a set of eight amplified artifacts emerge. High-octane riffage and groovin’ emissions host a vocal conquest that is potent and total, bringing hard rain to a cold dawn and warm song to all there beyond. »
New album FEED THEM TO THE LIONS available on all digital streaming services, limited edition black vinyl in sleeve case with handmade printed labels now available on Bandcamp:

South Grove are four friends that grew up in Athens, who came together in Berlin to share something they love.
The fundament of their live performances is the energy, on which a mixture of stoner rock riffs and blues rhythms breathe through melodic breakdowns that end up tasting soulfully intense.
2ND ALBUM IN THE MAKING FOR RELEASE LATER IN 2020!

WIVES
21.11.2019 Berlin – Urban Spree
Doors: 20:00 Uhr, Start: 21:00 Uhr
Tickets: www.greyzone-tickets.de/produkte/386

A new pearl has formed from the haze of the New York DIY scene: Wives.
The band around Jay Beach (guitar, vocals), Andrew Bailey (guitar), Alex Crawford (bass) and Adam Sachs (drums) released their first song « Waving Past Nirvana » in March 2019,
But behind « Waving Past Nirvana » there is no story about the legacy of Cobain, according to Jay Beach it’s about something completely different:

« Waving Past Nirvana » is a literal interpretation of the bodhisattva-one who has achieved the release, the awakened eye, and yet wants to trade it back for the painful life of desire because she/he/they predominantly feels compassion. This « entering back into the world » to fight a fool’s battle is the essence of « Waving Past Nirvana », and the video depicts one young woman’s journey along these lines.
Musically the Slackers catapult us back into the golden 90s. The implied noise of Sonic Youth meets the nervous hooks of the Pixies and merges with the wonderfully necessary vocals à la J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr). If you are not completely averse to the reference bands mentioned above, you should definitely remember this formation.

The quartet is currently working on their first album « So Removed », which will be released on 28 June via City Slang. But before that they will play some shows – including a concert in Germany. Let’s hope for seconds, after the release.

Berlin- Praha Barter

After the first exhibition, titled « Praha Berlin Barter » (March/April 2019) which was hosted by Urban Spree in Berlin, the gallery is this time being hosted by Trafo Gallery in Prague in a new group exhibition called « Berlin Praha Barter« .

Berlin Praha Barter

Preview: 16.05.2019
Exhibition: 17.05. – 23.06.2019

Curated by Pascal Feucher (Urban Spree)

In this second round, we have invited 11 visual artists of the Urban Spree family to exhibit artworks at Trafo Gallery:

The artists are representative of the new Berlin scene that emerged since the Fall of the Wall, starting with the precursor – Jim Avignon – quite known for his painted decors of many of the Berlin squatted clubs of the early 90’s and large historic murals (East Side Gallery) and whose remixed cubist/pop art/Neue Sachlichkeit aesthetics are iconic of the Berlin art scene.
Going along the figurative trail, Marion Jdanoff (half of the duo Palefroi) develops a highly poetic and fairytale-like universe, fueled with middle age tales, strange characters, fabled animals in a rich palette of colors. Fabian Warnsing paints large-sized canvases in a faux-naïf style, creating still life paintings, urban landscapes and everyday scenes.

The graphite drawings of Lars Wunderlich are part of a series from 2017 titled « East German Realities », whereby the artist applies his process of distortion and glitches to scenes witnessed in the Eastern parts of Germany where nationalism is still a vivid reality.

Sebas Velasco explores the remnants of the Eastern bloc in a series of oil paintings and drawings based on scenes from Yugoslavia and elsewhere, Plattenbau, old cars, graffiti, and neon hotel signs. An urban/architecture thematic which has been magnified over 20 years by EVOL with his stencils on outdoor electric boxes and on cardboard.

Going further, Hendrik Czakainski creates 3D large-scale post-architectural panels which are radical anatomical explorations of the urban body. His works are impressive, immersive, chaotic urban scenes captured from above, on a bird’s eye view perspective.

Besides figurative and architecture-inspired works, a strong line at Urban Spree has always been « post-graffiti abstraction », i.e. using the codes, techniques, roots, flow and philosophy of graffiti, where the letter becomes an abstraction, a substance.

While Stohead is closer in some instances to the true form of the letter (calligraphy, handstyle, overwriting), he has always experimented beyond it, trying to deconstruct and dissolve the Letter in a post-graffiti approach. Theresa Volpp‘s practice is more focused on the very subject of abstract art and bears only a faint distance to graffiti, although some form of automatic writing exists in her work, in a pre-graffiti way, as if abstract art is trying to reconnect with a certain flow but before the invention of graffiti..

Christian August creates multiple layers of grey colors by erasing, scratching, repainting, and finally achieving a wall texture (in the scratchy meaning of Dubuffet and Brassaï in the early 20th century), then completing his work by a stunning dash of ultramarine color, the artist’s persistent signature. Johannes Mundinger has also strong roots in wall painting and creates delicate abstract works in subdued tones, large shapes and blocs, stunning and contemplative abstract landscapes.

Oscillating between abstract and figurative art, Berlin Praha Barter shows a diversity of approaches and styles, seemingly loosely connected but united by an undercurrent practice of wall painting and shared values.

Urban Spree Galerie was created in Berlin-Friedrichshain in 2012 as a 400 sqm « artist-run » space with the objective of discovering and promoting the emerging international wave of post-graffiti painters and artists, with a strong focus on local talents.

The gallery is an essential part of Urban Spree, a 1.700 sqm independent multi-cultural complex comprising a Biergarten, a concert room, a bookshop, 5 artist studios, a screen printing studio, itself set in a 70.000 sqm postindustrial creative compound in the heart of Berlin (R.A.W.).

The gallery benefits from its large urban grassroots ecosystem and offers its invited artists an ideal space for experimentation through ambitious on-site residencies and monthly exhibitions that usually involve painting the outside walls of the compound.

It is armed with these values of generosity and openness, shared with Trafo Gallery, that we together decided to initiate a gallery exchange.

J.C. Satàn & Jessica93

Dawn of the Dance and GreyZone Concerts & Promotion present

J.C.Satàn + JESSICA93 LIVE

J.C.Satàn
J.C. Satàn is the meeting between the talented Arthur from Bordeaux, France (Polar Strong, The Meatards, Crane Angels..) and Paula from Torino, Italy (drawer, dj and booker of underground shows). They were noticed from their first two LPs Sick Of Love (2010) and Hell Death Samba (2011) on the american label Slovenly Recordings which had major critical and public success. For their audacious and perplexing third album Faraway Land (2012), they join the young and talented parisian label Teenage Menopause Records. In between a US tour in 2013, an european tour with Ty Segall in 2015, a China tour in 2016 and plenty of shows in France and European festivals, they released two more LPs with the trendy french label Born Bad Records, « S/T » (2015) and the brand new Centaur Desire (march 2018). As usual the band refuses to fall into repetition and instead, travels out of the comfort zone. They are exploring the musical landscapes of Pixies and The Queen of the Stone Age but never losing their own style and sound. Known to be some kind of stage warriors, their shows rise above their records. Someone talk about psychedelism, someone about punk-garage, it’s hard to define them.

JESSICA93
French one man project Jessica93 is a powerful and emotional force of hypnotic loops, grungy riffs and cold beats, all wrapped up in an impressive sense of delicate and to-the-point song writing.

Even Paris, the city of love, hosts its bleak and dingy suburbs. With the promise of magic so close within one’s reach, the lack of it becomes even more evident. In the midst of this space of hope turned disappointment, Geoff LaPorte goes on an escapist trip and takes on the moniker of Jessica93. Where others see beauty, he sees the rats. But Jessica is the coolest chick in class. She’s desirable and she has ability to transcend the mundane reality of Paris’ dirty streets. Or at least she tries. Jessica stands for all that we wish to be, but can’t. Instead, let’s embrace the dark humour of the universe. After all, it’s not for nothing Jessica93’s 2013 debut is called “Who cares”, with a picture of a bag of crack cocaine on the cover.

As one man playing all instruments, along with a trusty drum machine; Jessica93 builds his music with layers – balancing the raw and minimalist with a trippy warmth. This sense of dream and romance is present in all his songs, sometimes numbed in an opiate high, sometimes as matter-of-fact melancholia. This isn’t some pedal-fest without substance, or, for that matter, a total downer – some of those beats sounds like John Bonham trapped inside an ice box, and the groove is undeniable. Something wants to reach out for sure, and on stage this part-shoegaze-part-grunge-part-cold-wave operation of one does just that: reaches out and goes for the stars. It might all get buried in a heap of dirty clothes once back on earth, but still.

Using very little to achieve a lot – Jessica93 goes straight to the core of every aspect of his music – illuminating a brilliant song writer in the process. Nothing to hide, nothing to lose.

Wolf City presents Procession † Evil Spirit

And then, three years later, Procession came again. Bringing doom, fire and destruction from the North. They struck the City with unknown fury, the piles of corpses reaching heights of epic proportions. Above the ruins, they built a new city called Death with the skulls of the fallen, and among these walls the necromancers of Evil Spirit were dancing wildly with mad laughters.

Tavar Zawacki: Metamorphosis

Urban Spree Galerie is proud to present “Metamorphosis”, a solo exhibition by visual artist Tavar Zawacki in Berlin.

Zawacki will be presenting a museum style solo exhibition of twelve large format works on canvas with his signature hard edge painting style.

The Opening Reception will take place on the 7th of September 2017 at 19:00 at Urban Spree Galerie, Revaler Str. 99, Berlin-Friedrichshain together with the release of his second monograph, « Metamorphosis », a 168-page book published by Urban Spree Books.

Runtime: 8th of September – 8th of October, 2017.

The exhibition will display only large format originals and marks a clear new direction for the artist.

« The intention for the Metamorphosis exhibition was to transition into newer areas of my creativity with a fearless attitude. The past year I decided to slow down, and focus my attention inwards. My priority was to observe previous styles of artworks I had painted, and take them to a higher, more refined level. During this introspective period I was surprised to find that I had many barriers in my creativity that blocked my true visual style from being seen. It was disturbing for me to realize that I’ve been very fearful, and self conscious with my creative process. Metamorphosis is about transformation from one state into a newer dynamic one. With a lot of brutal honesty, and conviction for growth I was able to take inner inventory of what no longer served me. I was able to let go of the fears that were stifling my creative progression. I was prepared for feeling uncomfortable during this metamorphosis. I was learning how to unblock my personal censors, and be valiant in painting the styles of works I’ve previously been too reluctant to paint.

The Metamorphosis exhibition focuses on four different, and distinct styles of painting. Each painting style has it’s own unique personality. As a collective whole these twelve works on canvas best encompass my current interests of painting styles in my career. The restricted black and white designs display my attraction in sharp contrasting Op-Art visual effects. On the contrary, the CMYK designs are full of color achieved from overlapping secondary and tertiary shapes. The painting style of trompe l’oeil  has been a highlight of mine during this creative process. The manipulation of shadows, and illusion of depth added a nice dimensional element to Metamorphosis body of work. The fourth, and final painting style examines the relationship between both straight, and curved lines. The intention for this style was to have a balance within each of these defined compositions.

During the designing process of this exhibition I had achieved my goals of stepping out of my creative comfort zone, while pushing forward in these aforementioned styles of my creative interest. Thank you and I hope you enjoy the show. » Tavar Zawacki

In addition to the exhibition, Urban Spree Books will publish « Metamorphosis« , a 168-page monograph retracing the latest works and murals of the artist.

Last but not the least, a screen print will be released for the show in a standard black-and-white edition as well as a very limited large silver and gold edition.

The pdf catalogue of the show is now available upon request by writing to: galerie@urbanspree.com
