Hendrik Czakainski: Nonpoint Sources

« Imagine that you are a raindrop. It begins to rain and you hit the ground and flow across streets, parking lots, yards, construction sites, farm fields… Along the way, you pick up litter, oil, grease, metals, rubber, dirt, fertilizers, pesticides, animal waste, and other things left behind. All of these pollutants mix with the rain and flow away as nonpoint source pollution. » (Illinois Environmental Protection Agency).

In Hendrik Czakainski’s previous exhibition at Urban Spree Galerie, « Switch Over » (2018), the famed « invisible hand » of Adam Smith finally achieved its predictable self-strangulation and hinted towards the obliteration of the age of Anthropocene. His powerful works laid bare the rusted skeletons of what was once qualified as habitat. A post-architectural world – and beyond -, in which life subsided on the fringes, a derelict, abstract  and borderless Universum, morbidly fascinating.

For « Nonpoint Sources« , his 4th solo show at Urban Spree, Hendrik Czakainski fills his large wall sculptures with the particles and raindrops of our contaminated civilization, building his imaginary constructions only to let them succumb to the invisible and poisonous streams that run through it. Huge fracture lines dislocate high density environments, Earth is scorched beyond repair, structures are flooded with colored poisons that irrigate the veins of our industrial civilization.

We do not only see the structures, we see the flooding and the elements, we see how the artist skillfully paints and distorts the structures he so patiently erected.

Sicoer: Explorations

Urban Spree Galerie presents « Explorations« , the first solo show of the Krakow-based calligraffiti writer SICOER in Berlin.

« Explorations » is the outcome of several working sessions at Urban Spree Berlin in January and February 2020, interspersed with intense studio time in Krakow during the lockdown, resulting in an unexpected dialogue in time and space.

During this time, Sicoer has conducted extensive research and experiments about form and flow, perfecting structure, balance, free flow and ultimately meeting a form of abstraction.

« Explorations » is the outcome of a spiritual journey through letters.

Sicoer is a calligraffiti painter based in Krakow well known for his vandal graffiti as well as his handstyle studio works. Having started graffiti in 1998 and still active nowadays, Sicoer created in parallel a studio practice based on the combination of letters, geometric compositions, flow and a limited use of color range. Relentlessly exploring, Sicoer turned recently his graphic experiments towards calligraffiti abstraction.

Out of the darkness emerged ReveRso. The creation myth of a megalomaniac marred on its own venom: a fetishistic cannibal-of-self bound in love, loss, seduction, salvation, madness, prophecy and pain. Currently based in Berlin, ReveRso has massacred crowds on stages (and in alleyways) from Europe to America. A junky, he must devour the public to feel the light, his rite of purification through the shadows. To Repent to the name of no other but He ☦ ReveRso.

The one thing you can’t escape on BAMBARAS Stray is the blunt death. It is everywhere and inevitable, abstract and personified – perhaps the key to the whole record. Let yourself be surprised by the other companions of death on the meanwhile 4th album.

Bambara, consisting of twin brothers Reid and Blaze Bateh and William Brookshire from Athens, Georgia, have pushed their midnight sound further into the black depths of being since the release of their debut « Dreamviolence » in 2013.

It would be too easy to call « Stray » the « soundtrack of the graveyard ». You just finally did exactly what you had been after all along! The result is an exciting game between life and death!

Igor Revelis/Klone: The be(Longing)

Urban Spree Galerie presents « The be(Longing) », the 3rd solo exhibition of Tel-Aviv based artist Klone with Urban Spree Galerie.

After a decade exploring the medium of paper, « The be(Longing) » marks the return of the artist to the medium of canvas. Bringing his spray can technique of shadows and gradients to perfection, Klone paints monochrome compositions where the matter of the canvas blends into geometric shapes and abstract landscapes.

« The be(Longing) is an investigation of hybrid identity, a portal into a parallel realm tucked away from the increasingly globalized and visually homologized world. Set against the backdrop of dark gallery walls, restless portraits and landscapes can be peered at, stripped of all contextual clues, the painful human relation between object-subject tugs at the primal root of abstraction. There are no nouns in this landscape, everything is a verb, the gaze is an action. » Mika Bar-On Nesher

A few signed copies of the latest artist’s monograph – « FEWMOMENTSAGOIWASHERE »,  looking over the last 8 years of exhibitions, mural projects, installation, and animations, will be available at the opening.

Klone (b.1983) is an Ukrianian-born, Tel-Aviv based street artist, a pioneer of graffiti in Israel and a visual artist

Jonni Cheatwood: Tyger Tyger

Urban Spree Galerie presents « Tyger Tyger« , the first solo show in Europe of the L.A. based visual artist Jonni Cheatwood.

URBAN SPREE STUDIO, JUNE 2019

The American artist spent a month at Urban Spree in Berlin as an Artist-in-Residence to create 12 large format artworks that will be exhibited in the galerie from July 5th, 2019 to August 4th, 2019.

Jonni Cheatwood incorporates found fabrics into his canvases, which he himself cuts and saws, in order to create variations and move away from the uniform surface of the canvas. Some fabrics have geometric patterns whereas some others are figurative. The Residency enabled Jonni to source local fabrics, found in the Turkish market or in the street. Once the patchwork is assembled, Cheatwood paints blocks of colors on it, adding multiple layers of paint and agglomerating texture, freely outlining the shapes to convey dynamism and balance.

Jonni Cheatwood is an abstract painter whose work is about balance, shape and color and who can be related to the « Figuration narrative » movement. Here, Roy Lichtenstein makes an appearance in most canvases of the series as a reference and a cultural bridge as some fabrics sourced in Berlin include some embroidered stories derived from the American painter.

Jonni’s work is also close to the post-graffiti movement as we can also view his color shapes and black outlines as deconstructed graffiti.

Overall, his work is very dynamic, balanced and superbly colorful.

« Tyger Tyger burning bright,
In the forests of the night:
What immortal hand or eye,
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry? »
