Nocturnal Emissions has been one of the best kept secrets of the industrial genre since the 1970s. Led by Nigel Ayers, the band was one of the first to use tape cutting, avant-garde art, and underground video works to create a stage experience that was being cultivated by like-minded artists like Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire. The band moved on to using samplers and electronic noise in their early ’80s work, creating a twisted funk sound that would go on to influence everyone from Foetus to Negativland. They still utilized their former tricks, upping the ante with extremist performance art and more professional video displays. The group avoided signing to a major label, instead focusing on releasing their own music more effectively. They followed this path into the ’90s when they started www.earthlydelights.co.uk, an incredibly detailed website that promotes their various ideologies (they are strongly against the British monarchy and believe that citizens should have unlimited access to space travel) and constant release schedule. The band has released countless tapes and CDs of their material, and continues to unleash their noise through their website. Mannequin hast just released a compilation focusing on Nocturnal Emissions’ work between 1980 and 1989

Simon Crab is probably most well known as the founder and main-man of the power-electronics/Industrial, Post-rock, neo-no- wave, electro-acoustic, gabber-techno, dub-ethno-jazz-funk band—Bourbonese Qualk, as well as Sunseaster, an experimental-improvised-electro-acoustic noise project. Crab also learned traditional African and Middle Eastern music and is a member of London’s Gamelan orchestra.

In Japan, we have a lot of musical culture. We have Roland, KORG, YAMAHA, Technics, Sony…etc. We always chase our musical spirit and passion in our mind from ancient times. What is Japanese Techno? Today Japanese people love under ground music like Techno. The scene is not big like Berlin, but growing up as hidden musical culture for talented music lovers. Our all DJs are Japanese from Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Niigata and more. The rare breed that is Tomoki Tamura started his journey with dance music in Japan and has come a long way since. A move to London in 2004 inaugurated a series of Holic nights that would eventually lead him to rock the floors of top London venues including Fabric, Ministry of Sound, and Plastic People. Meanwhile, he had gained enough experience and respect to earn himself a residency at the legendary club The END / AKA from 2007 until its closure in 2009.

Quickly growing to become a staple night in London’s nightlife, HOLIC continued to flourish as it brought a fresh selection of quality house and techno djs to the capital. While the party bubbled in London, it also earned permanent residency at one of Japan’s most respected clubs, Womb in Tokyo. He began to play an important roll being the main underground music ambassador connecting Tokyo to London. With immediate affect, Tomoki received the much deserved respect and started to play in all corners of the world.

Almost a decade after HOLIC’s establishment, the launch of the label HOLIC TRAX came naturally in 2012 with a release from none other than Mr. G. The label’s unique raw take on house music has earned enormous praise from underground music lovers. With releases from Tuccillo, Rick Wade, Chris Carrier, Ekkohaus & Rufus, Kate Simko, and Robert Dietz, the label has proven to follow its own taste without compromise. Tomoki is one half of Doublet, a project in collaboration with Italian Ibiza resident Tuccillo. HOLIC TRAX has been the main outlet for their unique take on raw and moody house tracks.

Although proving to be a credible producer, label owner, and promoter, he knows his records the most and is a DJ above all. He now resides in Berlin where he calls home.

A hardware Techno unit based in Berlin, consisting of the brothers, Makoto and Yutaka.Inspired by Berlin techno sound, Sub Human Bros has a concept “to record the initial impulse of human beings”. Sub Human Bros is the one and only brother unit that keeps producing dynamic dance music and vivid sounds like band music from the techno point of view.
As organizing their party “PLANET BAR BERLIN”, they energetically play live acts at the leading clubs in Berlin, such as “Griessmuehle », « Chalet Club » and « Hoppetosse ». They toured in Tokyo,Kyusyu area Japan and in Hong Kong,Seoul as a release memorial live tour in Asia.

He was born in Kurasiki city,and is currently based in Tokyo.

But later got into the world of minimal techno and house music at around 90’s.

In the year 2003 as a DJ on a fashion show, 2004 as as a club DJ, he started his career. He represented Kansai region and established „TetralogisticS“ , a party which has been initiated in the domestic techno scene.
With his experience of a super long set as 18 hours or 24 hours, also he dared a one-men DJ party „Sound by Sound (Circus Osaka)“ for three times and earned a huge reputation.
As well he performed at the dance music festival „The Star Festival (Kyoto)“ which Japan boasts the world and the „dance music festival“ (formerly: Nagisa music festival/Osaka).
Being a DJ with one and only dance music which let us feel the prominence sensitivity, he plays not only minimal techno, also incorporated house, electro, dubstep, dub and ambient, and seek the developing „sound“ and expand his width of genre.
With this wide range of sound and groove and individual development he gather support among the crowd and also among DJs.
He will steadily display his ability and his personality which cannot be ignored.

He started DJ in 2004, belongs to fanxsmusic as “DJ1000DREAM”. He is based in west side of Japan, played at famous places like Zepp Osaka, Creative Centre Osaka, etc. He also played with famous foreign artists.
In 2006, he started to play as “Mitsuda Daisuke”, exploring new genre of music. His mix-work with House, Techno, Deep House, and Chillout are really unique and intelligent. “Mitsuda Daisuke” was catapulted into fame in club scene in Japan.
He works also as a promotor, he established “4-Beat Entertainment”, produces artists and does comprehensive management energetically.
In 2014, he visited Ibiza to expand his fields in Europe, after that he moved to Berlin. He absorbed the essence of Techno there, and started to play as “DHADHA » ”, aimed to sublime his music as an artwork. His mix “The Ibiza 2015” ranked the first place on “beatport”. His great works brought sensation to the audience, he achieved the brilliant feat as a first Japanese. His musical quality has been known, he played more than 10 times in Ibiza, and he held an event and did headliner in Ibiza in 2015. His enthusiasm and stoic attitude towards music, spreads vivid impression to audience’s mind.

We are massively looking forward to celebrating the longest day of the year in the most beautiful Scandinavian way with thousands of people. Of course maypole, bands & DJ’s, flower wreaths, typical Midsommar games and food & drinks won’t be missing either this year.

This time, we not only mind and balance gender ratio, but also focus on a sustainable and fair attendance of our dearest furry friends and want to show that one can experience a beautiful and delicious festival completely without dead meat. For it, a good amount of local food trucks will whip various vegan delicacies.

Orsten Groom: Chrome Dinette

Du 23 Octobre au 23 Janvier 2021, la galerie berlinoise Urban Spree est heureuse d’offrir au peintre Orsten Groom sa première exposition personnelle en Allemagne, « CHROME DINETTE ».

Artiste radicalement indépendant et autogéré, Orsten Groom s’est imposé en quelques années comme un acteur incontournable de la jeune scène picturale française, entre milieux alternatifs et institutions muséales.

Sa première rétrospective a été présentée cette année au centre d’art contemporain ACMCM de Perpignan (France) – à seulement 37 ans.

L’exposition berlinoise réunit près d’une quarantaine d’oeuvres, présentées en deux sections :

– le grand ensemble rupestre de 17 toiles « CHROME DINETTE » (accompagné de son proverbial Divan), ronde démente sur les liens unissant Sigmund Freud et Moïse par Égypte antique et caniches malades interposés – sous l’égide de Frank Zappa;

– Une vaste sélection récapitulative de grands formats emblématiques de l’artiste, véritable parcours «subconscient» aux allures de sarcophage pariétal.

 

ORSTEN GROOM (CHROME DINETTE): « YAHVOLCANISMUS » – (Esquisse)

La peinture d’Orsten Groom se présente comme « Art pariétal post-historique ».

Le fameux artiste allemand Jonathan Meese a dit de lui : « Orsten Groom vient des grottes et du Moyen-Âge et garde l’histoire vivace dans l’art actuel. Il vient du futur ».

Fresques au fatras apocalyptique saturées de créatures tirées du Styx de l’oubli par enquêtes talmudiques délirantes, récapitulation carnavalesque de l’histoire depuis le flot des origines et l’histoire de l’art, sa peinture rugit sur de grandes toiles peuplées de figures enchevêtrées par mythologies et archétypes grotesques, Danses macabres glanées par un détective archéologue de la langue.Sa matière est dense, volcanique, habitée comme les foies antiques d’un rituel divinatoire.

« Ce trouble est semblable à celui que j’éprouve dans les grottes de Lascaux ou Chauvet, devant les tableaux du Greco ou de Picasso ou encore au XXe siècle devant l’oeuvre essentielle de Gérard Gasiorowski », comme l’écrit Olivier Kaeppelin, commissaire de sa récente exposition parisienne POMPEII MASTURBATOR – Pour laquelle le Parc archéologique de Pompeii en personne s’est fendu d’une plainte.

Orsten Groom a subi en 2002 un anévrisme qui l’a laissé amnésique et épileptique. Il est diplômé de l’École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris en 2009 et du Fresnoy en 2011. Il est lauréat de plusieurs prix : Prix l’art est vivant (2019), Prix de Peinture de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts (2016) et Prix de Peinture Antoine Marin (2015). Le célèbre fabricant de peinture Marin fabrique une couleur à son nom, le Rose Groom.

Il est également musicien, auteur de recueils de poèmes cubistes anglais, cinéaste (Prix du jury pour son film BOBOK au festival Côté-Court 2011) et depuis 2012 auteur du cycle vidéo Les Ballets Russes.

Il a collaboré avec les commissaires et auteurs Olivier Kaeppelin et Paul Ardenne, le cinéaste Guy Maddin, le traducteur et poète André Markowicz, ainsi que l’écrivain Boris Wolowiec.

Livermori vol. 3

For this 3rd edition of Livermori we count with two members of the Barcelonian collective Draft, which after they threw their first party on May 2017, kept on organizing the event monthly, always inviting a great selection of some of the most interesting artists in the electronic music scene nowadays. Dj Dustin, PLO Man, Makam, Lux, Marc Piñol, John Talabot, Blawan, Mumdance, Claro Intelecto, An-I, Halal & Relaxer… are some of the artists that have visited their lovely curated event and always left with a smile in their face. On the 25th of april, you can listen to three DJs that represent the variety of taste that can be found on the artists invited to their Draft events.

New York Perspectives

Urban Spree Galerie presents New York Perspectives, a duo show featuring Chris « Daze » Ellis and Joe Conzo, curated by Mode2. The vernissage will be on Friday, November 22nd, at 18:30, in presence of the two artists.

    Through the work of two New York City-born artists, a painter and a photographer, this exhibition is an attempt to show aspects of New York City life, through the eyes and the work of two very different individuals; though both come from a part of its counterculture.

    The drawings and paintings of the artist Chris “Daze” Ellis, and those many moments and people captured by the photography of Joe Conzo show us how the youth that were more in osmosis with the steel, the concrete, the glass, the streets and the city’s subway system, could develop new forms of visual dialogue that could form a bridge between their own social and cultural background, and a movement that would infiltrate the artworld and become a global phenonmenon.

   Coming from different neighbourhoods and cultural backgrounds, both have lived long enough to have witnessed first hand the huge transformations that the city has gone through over these last decades, while their “work”, which was actually their hobby, passion and life pretty much, has documented seminal eras during that time.

  These tumultuous years of cultural flux; of blossoming, blooming, destruction and rebirth, are often overlooked by today’s focus on the “now” of street art, and the way through which this eclipses the very alchemy that gave birth to the way in which artists express themselves in the street today, or the way in which they document city life.

    It is doubtful that much of what is happening today in visual art, music, dance and written or spoken word ever would have happened, if generations of youth in New York City had not lived what they did many decades ago; and we can count ourselves lucky that a few rare individuals happened to be there and have the instinct to document it.

  Here then, are views of New York from two different perspectives, they themselves being a complex accumulation of all of life’s experiences, and how they shape each individual’s understanding of the world around them; and the ways by which they choose to express and share this with us.

Urban Spree Prints will release two 18″x 24″ silk screen prints by Daze on the opening night and online.

The gallery and the curator heartily thank Henry Chalfant for letting us show his documentary movie “From Mambo to Hip Hop: A South Bronx Tale.”

Chris « Daze » Ellis

Growing up in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, Chris Daze Ellis (b. 1962) was aware from early on of the names and the odd characters that would be dancing along the trains that wove their way through the city. When he started out at the High School of Art & Design in 1976, he found that there was a whole community of very diverse yet like-minded individuals there, also involved with this scene; some of whom would go on to make a name for themselves in the art world.

Being a fan of drawing and comic books already, Daze camouflaged his nighttime activities under his parents’ gaze, exploring and expanding his visual vocabulary, combining the traditional with the dynamism of a new and challenging environment, with stimulus of its own.

Having mastered the medium and the environment, Daze would go on to shape his own personal vision of the world, looking as much inwards as outwards, in the relationship between the trains and walls, and what he could further explore in the studio. The strength of his successful life as an artist in his own right would develop from then on.

From his participation in his first group show, Beyond Words, at the Mudd Club in 1981, before having his own solo show at Fashion Moda (the historical South Bronx art space that bridged the established art world with the raw talent and energy coming out of New York City), Daze embraced the wide horizon that opened up before him.

From then on, Daze began to show in many different cities around the world, whether it be galleries and museum, in solo shows as well as group formats. He has participated in many public or educational art projects around the world, working with students and communities from South Korea to Brazil via Haiti, while often visiting Europe as well, and contributing to New York mural initiatives like the Leap Arts Program or Thrive Collective.

From his appearances in the film Style Wars, to being an art consultant on the Netflix series The Get Down in 2017, to participating in public painting projects from the Star Ferry Terminal in Hong Kong in 1993, painting an entire Hannover train station with fellow artists Lee Quinones and John Crash Matos, or being commissioned for murals by private clients like the law firm, Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton in Washington D.C. 2018; Daze has constantly had his hands on a whole range of different projects.

Daze’s paintings have found themselves in many private collections including Eric Clapton, Natalie Imbruglia, and Madonna. His work can also be found in the permanent collections of The Whitney Museum, NY, Museum of Modern art, NY, The Museum of the city of New York, The Ludwig Museum, Aachen, Yale University art Gallery, New Haven, Addison Museum of American Art at the Phillips Academy, Andover.

Chris Daze Ellis continues to live and work in New York City.

Joe Conzo

Joe Conzo was born in the Bronx during an era of great upheaval, when the construction of the Cross Bronx Expressway was nearing its end, having destroyed the communities that lay in its path, and condemning those parts of the borough around it to social and economic decline. The apocalyptic landscapes of urban devastation, and the high criminality associated to it are emblematic of that era.

President Truman’s Urban Renewal announced in 1949, ruthlessly applied by Robert Moses, targetted the more modest and ethnically diverse neighbourhoods of New York City whose resistance to forced removal would fall on deaf ears, as private developers grabbed the prime lots. The Bronx represented both the laboratory and the collateral damage for these extreme experiments of urban renewal.

And yet, out of what looked like an urban war zone, the city’s youth began to pick up the pieces, and, out of the desolation around them, began to build their own road out of it. Realising that the state was not going to do anything positive for them, their survival instincts eventually kicked in; and out of the gang culture, the drugs, and the sheer nihilism that had reigned for a while over much of the borough, new and greener shoots were beginning to break through.

Joe Conzo’s cultural capital, and that of his peers, was probably key to his survival and his blossoming during those harsh years; grandson of Dr. Evelina López Antonetty, a political activist who played a huge role in developing educational programmes for Puerto Rican children, and son of Joe Conzo Snr., who was in the thick of the huge Latin music scene of that bridged those decades; hanging with all the main players of that era, and having been the biographer of Tito Puente.

While studying at the Agnes Russell School on the campus of Columbia University, he discovered photography, the medium that would enable him to document what went on around him; from the world of latin culture through his father’s connections, to the collision of art forms that would later be called Hip Hop; a word that eclipses the sum of its parts.

Having lived many ups and downs in the eighties, to a rebirth of sorts, Joe Conzo went on to become a qualified medical nurse, then worked for the New York City Fire Department, being among the first responders on 9/11. At some point along the way, he was reunited with the camera, and began shooting again…

Whether as the photographer of rap crew The Cold Crush Brothers, a hugely influential group of MCs from the early days, or just a boy from the Bronx who had a camera and curious eyes, Joe Conzo’s photos provided reference material to Henry Chalfant ‘s documentary “From Mambo to Hip Hop: A South Bronx Tale.”, and were documented in a book called “Born In The Bronx: A Visual Record of the Early Days of Hip Hop”.
