Urban Spree celebrates 10 years of the Astronaut Cosmonaut Wall

To mark the 10-year anniversary of the iconic « Astronaut Cosmonaut » mural painting in Berlin Kreuzberg, Urban Spree Galerie invites the French street artist Victor Ash for a special pop up exhibition.

The exhibition will be centered around the cult figure of the Astronaut with numerous original/stenciled works on paper and a mural at Urban Spree. A series of screen prints is expected to be released as well.

Alongside Blu’s now gone white characters on the Cuvrybrache, Victor Ash’s « Astronaut Cosmonaut » has achieved a cult mural status for Berlin.

Standing in Berlin-Kreuzberg near Kottbusser Tor and painted during the legendary Backjumps Festival #3 in 2007, the painting of a floating astronaut on 22 x 14 meters strikes a particular chord in Berlin.

For the parisian artist born in 1968 and fascinated by the Cold War, space exploration, graffiti, subcultures & electronic music, Berlin was to become from the mid to late 80s and since then a focal point of his attention, with regular trips to the city alongside artistic projects and residencies.

Victor Ash photographed by Soren Solkaer in 2013

In 2007, the Backjumps Festival – brilliantly curated by Adrian Nabi, gives Victor Ash the occasion to paint a big wall. Victor wants to concentrate and express his past experiences and vision of Berlin, the space race between the USSR and the USA but also the different Berlin subcultures and the desire to escape reality. « I got inspired by the song from David Bowie « Space Oddity » from 1969 in which he tells the story of a astronaut who gets lost in space and later on with the song « Ashes to Ashes » in 1981 where Bowie tells us that the spaceman was in fact a junkie on a trip ».

For the artist, the « Astronaut/Cosmonaut » represents the will to escape to other universes, « like as a little child, I escaped to a fantasy world with my space drawings and as a teenager, I escaped to subcultures to find my identity in the urban environment where I grew up ».

Danny Figueroa (Wesr): Hits and Flops

Urban Spree Galerie is proud to invite you to the opening of « Hits and Flops », a new solo exhibition in the Galerie’s Ecke of works on paper by Peruvian-born and Berlin-based artist Danny Figueroa alias WESR.

« Hits and Flops » is a new series of works on paper, sketches and drawings presented by Danny Figueroa. Also known for his large street art pieces, Danny Figueroa’s drawing practice and experiments have always been an integral part of his artistic life.

The drawing series presented at Urban Spree Galerie are mainly figurative in nature but are made of an ever-changing matter, a fragile essence where transformation is occurring relentlessly, where nothing can be properly fixed, like a fugitive steam slipping out of a defaulting pressure cooker. This evanescence comes up with their perceived defaults and successes, or as the artist calls them, their « hits and flops ».

About the artist:

Danny Figueroa was born in 1980 in Chiclayo, Peru and grew up in the capital Lima where he has been active as a graffiti artist since 1996 under the pseudonym « Wesr ». He was strongly affected in his youth by the cultural clash between Peru’s traditions and the overwhelming americanization. This is also reflected in his art, in which he brings together the aesthetics of traditional and contemporary japanese graphic illustrations with elements of Peruvian indigenous art. Figueroa often reproduces masked figures revealing their innermost part beneath the masks and allowing for a variety of interpretations. The texture of narrow lines defining the structure of his works like scars grant access to the histories behind the unique personality of every singular character. His oeuvre ranges between muralism, painting and illustration and is marked by abstract figures with mask-like faces that might remind of early 20th century futurism. Since 2008, he lives and works in Berlin.

Urban Spree Galerie Ecke:

The « Ecke » (for « corner » in german) is the second exhibition space of Urban Spree. Located in the galerie on the opposite side of the main gallery space, the Ecke is focused on works on paper, drawings, illustration, and photography, albeit on a scale that reveals a more intimate facet of the artists.

WALLS

For their first show of 2020, Urban Spree Galerie presents « WALLS », a collective exhibition featuring 30 international artists and dedicated to the notion of the « wall ».

Curated by Fabrice Douar and Cyrille Gouyette (Le Louvre Museum, Paris) and co-curated by Pascal Feucher (Urban Spree Galerie, Berlin), « WALLS » invites prominent artists from both the comics scene and the street art scene to create graphic works of fiction related to walls, interpreted either as simple architectural elements, ominous symbols of segregation, canvases and vessels to convey meaning, textures, or imaginary playgrounds and labyrinths.

While some antique artefacts appear in the show to testify of their immortal, silent presence, in the 21st Century, the Minotaur doesn’t wait at the center of his realm but has clearly moved outside, demultiplied its presence, and is building more walls.

The exhibition’s direction is therefore resolutely multifaceted, contemporary and graphic-oriented, spanning several topographies (Europe, South Korea, Middle East, Hong Kong, Cuba…), and art forms (painting, photography, installations, videos).

Praha-Berlin Barter

In March/April 2019, Urban Spree Galerie invites Prague-based Trafo Gallery for a group show and gallery exchange.

« Praha-Berlin Barter » will take place from 28.03.2019 to 21.04.2019 and will display the works of 8 prominent Czech artists from the Trafo gallery.

Curated by Trafo Gallery Director Blanka Čermáková, the group show oscillates between contemporary urban arts (Jan Kaláb, Michal Škapa), pop surrealism (Jan Vytiska), contemporary drawing, sculpture, digital art, animation (Jakub Janovský, Michal Cimala, Jakub Nepraš), and geometric abstraction paintings (Robert Šalanda, Ira Svobodová). All artists have been involved in the old Trafacka space in Prague before its destruction and are actively involved into the new Trafo Gallery.

This group exhibition marks the first exchange between 2 independent European galleries sharing the same values and a similar history.

Trafacka was created in 2006 as a gallery and residential space located in an old power station in an industrial district of Prague.
After a couple of years, the place was occupied by more than 100 living and working artists in 36 studios, exhibiting in Trafo Gallery. More than 200 projects took place over the course of 8 years, until the place was finally destroyed in 2014. In 2016, the gallery managed to relocate in a former slaughterhouse (Vietnamese market of Prague, across the river from the historical center). Trafo Gallery was reborn with a 200 sqm gallery space and 4 artist studios. The artist-run gallery presents six exhibitions and six books per year with a focus on the new contemporary Czech art scene and the genres of street art, sculptures, abstraction painting, and digital art.

In the words of Blanka Čermáková, Director of Trafo Gallery: « One exhibition per year is a sort of barter with international projects and galleries which this year leads us to Berlin, city of art, angels and friends. Eight artists based in Prague, united with a long term bond to Trafo Gallery and our history, – Ira Svobodová, Jan Kaláb, Jakub Nepraš, Michal Cimala, Michal Škapa, Jan Vytiska, Robert Šalanda and Jakub Janovský – represent strong personalities and different art expressions. Ira Svobodová paints exact architectural compositions and builds perspective with colors and shadows, Jan Kaláb, a well known artist to Urban Spree with strong street art roots and perfect color and shapes styles, Jakub Nepraš shape sculptures as a platform for his vivid videocollages of microscopic worlds of nature and human babylons, Michal Cimala composes sculptures made often from collected material to existentialist compositions. Graffiti legend Michal Škapa works with urban scenery, apocalyptic and architecture destruction or using expressive colors when writing his crypted rune texts on canvases. Jan Vytiska is a painter of zombie romantic and surrealistic stories often based in forest neighbourhood or in postapocalyptic times. Robert Šalanda works with paper collages of abstract color shapes and transpose it to canvases where playfully upgrades new compositions with gradient colors. Last but not least Jakub Janovský is recognizable with his figurative drawings and often black and white coloring, silicon, enamel or airbrush outlines and ironic reflecting of society problems and characters.

All of these artists, whether picturing abstract motives, displaying the view of their world around or in their visions, are the subatomic particles bonding Trafo Gallery fluidum together. Without them, Trafo Gallery would never exist ».

In June 2019, Urban Spree’s artists will be hosted in Prague by Trafo Gallery.
